Santuario di Montenero, Livorno

According to legend, the origin of Santuario di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. Santuario di Montenero is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Livorno Edition.

  • The periodic visit to the Sanctuary of Montenero is an experience that accompanies me for several decades. It is a place of recollection that takes you out of time, projects you into a dimension where thoughts become simple, essential. The place is very beautiful, held in an excellent way, everything smells of incense and Christian simplicity.

  • An experience of Faith and a place of recollection and prayer for believers, but also a fascinating tour immersed in the Art and History of the Sanctuary and the great hill that looks at the city of Livorno.

  • Just love this place. So unique and meaningful for Tuscany. Our Lady of Montenero is the patronness of the whole region. The Shrine (full of ex votos of stunning miracles attributed to her intercession) looks above the whole city of Livorno, the shore and even the islands, if the day is clear enough. A must for whoever visits this part of Tuscany!
  • Amazing presentation of thanks gifts from survivors of different situations and saved newborns during delivery. Incredible view of Livorno from the Montenero Alto.
  • A magical, special place. Went to mass - it was packed with a million kids, wonderfully serene. Afterwards, a beautiful courtyard with shops offering religious merchandise, and a gallery of gratitude notes from those who prayed here. Special reverence towards St John Paul II. Next doir: amazing restaurant "Montallegro" with wonderful, authentic food and amazing views and a lush garden.
  • For adorer of Papa Giovanni Paolo ii a very nice place. We have been here several times and will be back every time we are in Tuscany.
  • You get there after a convoluted but beautiful scenic road. The place where it rises is beautiful, ample parking not far from the basilica, in the vast square are held outdoor ceremonies very suggestive. Vast and interesting collection of the former vote in the covered cloister, where there are also shops for the sale of objects more or less sacred, there is also the pharmacy of the monks. The basilica is sumptuous and contains the image of the Madonna protectress of Tuscany.
