Church
According to legend, the origin of Santuario di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. • A lovely, peaceful location with great views over the bay. Make sure you check the opening times as the sanctuary was closed for lunch whilst I was there. The grotto and toilets were still open.  more »

  • The sanctuary cherishes the fourteenth-century image of Madonna and child, patron saint of Tuscany. It has an outstanding collection of votive offerings from various periods. Beautiful views of the sea and the town below

  • I find myself in a couple of times a year and I go into raptures. The silence here hardly find elsewhere. I'm always in the guesthouse of the sanctuary and aside from places of worship, which are beautiful to see, it's worth trying the traditional funicular, and take a walk down the Hill, where you can admire the entire Livorno, to the port and the sea.

  • You can enjoy a great panorama of Livorno, which runs from the sea of ardenza Apuan peaks. The sanctuary is impressive, definitely the path from the halls of votive offerings left by worshippers pardoned by our Lady, patroness of Tuscany.

  • Patron of Tuscany. Lets in many feelings. The ex-voto enchant the visitor. To see in the days of work that is less crowded.

  • To arrive at the shrine of Montenero along a road surrounded by nature, from the sanctuary it enjoys a beautiful view over the city of Livorno, is a strikingly beautiful and special. Inside it is interesting to note the small paintings depicting the miracles and graces received from the Madonna di Montenero, some very, very old. Also the cave for prayers outside the Church.
