Santuario di Montenero, Livorno

According to legend, the origin of Santuario di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. Santuario di Montenero is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Livorno Edition.

  • If you are driving on the Etruscan coast, it's well worth a visit to the shrine of our Lady of grace, much better known as the sanctuary of Montenero, stands on the Hill of Monte Nero, in Livorno. The complex is kept by the vallombrosan monks and is dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie di Montenero, patron saint of Tuscany ("Mater Etruriae"); the shrine also includes a rich Gallery of votive offerings and, outside, is preceded by the Memorial Chapel, the burial place reserved for some illustrious livornesi.

  • I had been to the shrine of Montenero with classmates for 100 days to maturity examination and, taken from the emphasis of that day, I had admired the true beauty and true spirituality. Recommend a visit to those who are in the area because you will be fascinated by both the Cathedral, both from the context; beautiful read those miracles and those thanks to so many people. I picked up a beautiful Rosary stalls out. Have many religious things and also ideal for the cribs. Prices are modest, I dwell!

  • Personally I don't remember how many times I've been there, from when I was little I have brought us plenty of times and over the years we have kept coming back to thank the graces received. We go every year in early summer. To visit strictly in silence and with suitable attire

  • Amazing place of worship with impressive view of the area. Faith is at home here.
  • The sanctuary of Montenero is present in the memory of so many children, especially a few years ago, because a common destination for weekend outings of the families of the area. It is a place, regardless of Faith, which has its own quaint charm. Note the presence of caves, which however this year in September, when I came back after at least 15 years since your last visit, I found closed and in apparent State of disrepair. Impressive and fascinating collection of votive offerings, many of which are small works of art, illustrations and stories of the circumstances of the graces, going back in time more than a century. The place surrounding the Sanctuary does enjoy beautiful scenery and gives me the idea of glories past and today a bit washed out, although it is certainly cured. When you leave, it may be worth also to take a ride on the funicular, although absolutely end in itself because in downstream square there is little to see and do.

  • Beautiful sanctuary, is certainly worth a visit, beyond religious faith. Interesting also the Gallery of votive offerings, with moments of life lived in the last two centuries: some are very unique. Inside there is also a shop selling religious objects, candles and a lounge where you can turn on. There is also a room dedicated to the confessions.

  • Sanctuary place of peace and prayer, where surely they can get help in simple cases but even in the most desperate ... There are walls covered with votive offerings, made over the centuries by the Livorno before and all Tuscany and not only then to myriads of graces received from Madonna. Ask for Don Luca
