Santuario di Montenero, Livorno
(4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
According to legend, the origin of Santuario di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. • Visiting Livorno where we came by motorhome, we note some writing that indicate a sanctuary located on a Hill east of Livorno. We reach Montenero in WaSP and decide to go to the shrine for the funicular. A cute half that in about 5/10 minutes brings you close to the square where stands the Church. The sanctuary is very nice both inside the square with its monumental funeral on newsstands. It's very cold and humidity bathe abundantly the churchyard. After a prayer we leave this holy place much revered by Livorno. Deserves a visit and ... used the funicular.

  • Tiny place but charming, can also be reached by cable car, I couldn't really see the Interior of the Church as there was mass. Will stay again

  • Great location, on a hill overlooking the Livorno coast overlooking the sea and the surrounding landscape. Within large exhibition of votive offerings, religious goods store overlooking the cloister (too bad not accessible to the public). The square in front of souvenir shops and public places to drink after the visit.

  • Our Lady of Montenero sanctuary patroness of Tuscany, on a hill behind Livorno accessible by road and parking about three hundred meters, or by cable car from Piazza delle Carrozze (from the city to get there by bus # 2).

  • The sanctuary of Montenero is an expensive place to Livorno. The Madonna depicted in the little picture on the central altar is said to have miraculous powers. The Church is not particularly beautiful, but interesting is the Gallery of votive offerings testifying as the livornesi faithful have received thanks salla Madonna.
