Santuario di Montenero, Livorno
(4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
According to legend, the origin of Santuario di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. • for me that I am a Christian these places are important and necessary. Others may not know what they're missing!

  • It is a place that has to be seen either as a place of pilgrimage to our Lady patroness of Tuscany or as tour to see a Church/convent feature with a breathtaking view. It is easy to reach by car but I recommend downstream stop and climb with the characteristic gondola that in minutes will take you close to the place of the Church.

  • Sanctuary of Montenero, the colle di Montenero, since the first half of the 14th century is a place of pilgrimage. The current sanctuary dates back to the 18th century and inside houses a significant number of ex-voto. On the square outside, under a loggia, are located some graves of famous Leghorn as Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi and Giovanni Fattori.

  • Great location, on a hill overlooking the Livorno coast overlooking the sea and the surrounding landscape. Within large exhibition of votive offerings, religious goods store overlooking the cloister (too bad not accessible to the public). The square in front of souvenir shops and public places to drink after the visit.

  • Our Lady of Montenero sanctuary patroness of Tuscany, on a hill behind Livorno accessible by road and parking about three hundred meters, or by cable car from Piazza delle Carrozze (from the city to get there by bus # 2).

  • The sanctuary of Montenero is an expensive place to Livorno. The Madonna depicted in the little picture on the central altar is said to have miraculous powers. The Church is not particularly beautiful, but interesting is the Gallery of votive offerings testifying as the livornesi faithful have received thanks salla Madonna.
