Santuario di Montenero, Livorno

4.5
#1 of 17 in Historic Sites in Province of Livorno
According to legend, the origin of Santuario di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. Santuario di Montenero is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Livorno Edition.

  • We went in July, visited the Interior very exciting, full of testimonies of thanks received by our Lady of Montenero over the centuries to the present day, arrive at the shrine by taking the funicular.

  • Return to this sanctuary after years. My parents brought me here when I was a kid and I still remember some pictures as I was impressed. Now after many years I renew those emotions and confirm l beauty and interest that elicits ip sanctuary. Not to be missed

  • Really relaxing. The monastery is very nice to visit. Close to it there are a few stalls selling home decor interesting. From there you have a very nice view of the city!

  • The beautiful church in Baroque style. Beautiful artwork in addition to our Lady of grace. Inside a magnificent air of serenity and contemplation. Significant ex-votos of the faithful. To observe also the Gallery of Tuscan municipalities. To the right of the sanctuary out there are the chapels of the great livornesi. Instead of looking at the horizon we can see the picturesque view of marine and terrestrial.

  • The view you can enjoy from up is gorgeous, makes five stars. My advice is to leave the car at the parking lot at the bottom and go up to the sanctuary by cable car, at the cost of a ticket. The sanctuary, a classic place of faith turned into commercial business a little kitchy. But faith is not discussed, and certainly goes beyond these aspects.

  • I recommend you leave down your machine and take the cable car. The view is outstanding, sea; behind the altar there is a corridor where there are all the coats of arms of cities of Tuscany and in the end there is a small chapel.

  • The sanctuary cherishes the fourteenth-century image of Madonna and child, patron saint of Tuscany. It has an outstanding collection of votive offerings from various periods. Beautiful views of the sea and the town below

  • I find myself in a couple of times a year and I go into raptures. The silence here hardly find elsewhere. I'm always in the guesthouse of the sanctuary and aside from places of worship, which are beautiful to see, it's worth trying the traditional funicular, and take a walk down the Hill, where you can admire the entire Livorno, to the port and the sea.
