Livorno is a busy working port and there is little for the tourist here but it does have two forts. Fortezza Vecchia dates back to the mid 1500s and is close to the area known as Piccola Venezia, a small neighbourhood with canals. Sadly the fort was badly damaged in WW2, the townsfolk sheltered here during the war, but entering it via a tunnel through the very thick walls gives some idea of what it must once have been like. Hardly anything remains of the buildings but it has been turned into a park and gives the opportunity for a pleasant stroll and a view across the canal to other sites in the town
Perfect picnic spot.

Federico DebettoAn undeniable part of history of Livorno, is open for the most part. Only saw that Google from "keep God Matilde" tallest Tower of the fortification. It is often used for exhibitions and events, especially during summer.show original
