  • Catherine's Church, begun in 1720 to a design by Giovanni del fantasy, was consecrated in 1755. Octagonal, the Church is characterized by a large dome reduced to the appearance of the tower due to static problems. Inside you can admire a remarkable oil painting by Vasari.

  • This impressive 18th-century Church, undamaged by the war, was performed on a circular plan, with tall lantern that encompasses the great baroque dome painted with trompe l'oeil and stories of the Virgin. Many radial chapels are positioned all around. Among them one with beautiful local icon venerated Madonna di Montenegro and 17th-century marble font, a large organ with painting of Saint Catherine where the Church is dedicated, a chapel with an eighteenth-century flight into Egypt, and finally a chapel with eighteenth-century statues of the Ecce Homo venerated, of our Lady of Sorrows, scourged Jesus, and Jesus in the garden of olives. Worthy of particular note Giorgio Vasari altarpiece on the high altar, The Coronation of the Virgin, above the beautiful wooden choir from the local Cathedral. Really the most beautiful church in Livorno.

  • After the sanctuary of Montenero and the inseparable Duo "Duomo di San Francesco-Church of Santa Giulia", the Church of Saint Catherine-located in the District of "Venice" not far from "new fortress"-is the third vertex of the triangle "devotional" livornese. Don't let negatively from the mighty octagonal drum resting on a rough brick base "anonymous". Neither the overall structure that appears at bottom a little disproportionate and cumbersome in the urban context of the "I" and the disappointing square in front of it deserves, in itself, an appropriate "Makeover". Do not rush to judge! Revenue and then-kinda like in San Lorenzo in Florence-you will have the unexpected vision of an airy interior architecture in the Baroque style and an impressive 19th-century frescoes in the dome, the largest in all of Tuscany. Not to mention then the valuable painting of the coronation of the Virgin "which stands on the high altar, designed by Giorgio Vasari, and the game of" gaps "between the pillars in side chapels. The suggestion is remarkable and you'll end up with the nose in the air although the poor lighting of the dome will not help surely your curiosity to tourists. How to put it? Fiat lux, please! ... Neither inter alia-but someone correct me as well in case of an error. -I think it will be to your rescue audiovisual teaching equipment. With the leave of the Pisani and pride of Leghorn, it should be noted that the religious building with its 63 meters height exceeds the "leaning tower" in Pisa. The adjacent Dominican convent then-used as a prison during the Napoleonic era--"hosted", among others, during the "twenty years", the future President of the Republic Sandro Pertini. In addition, over the small bridge on the "I" and the "Scali del Vescovado", you can reach in a few minutes at the entrance of the "new fortress" that deserves itself a visit to the tranquillity of his Park, for the glimpses it offers on the "Vault", the ancient "Scali delle Cantine" and "lantern" in the same Santa Caterina. Within walking distance you will encounter the remains of the theatre finally "San Marco," place of Foundation of the Italian Communist party means a facility in poor structural condition already at that time, so much so that-is common knowledge ...-participants had to have open umbrellas inside the Hall to shelter from the rain that came down from the roof caved! ...
