  • The beautiful St Michael's Tower, located in Ostia, towards the area of Idroscalo, near the mouth of the River Tiber, (Fiumara Grande). The tower is octagonal and is 18 metres high. It was built by order of Pope Pius V, designed by MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI, in about 1560. Was a watchtower to defend the coast and the River, later also used as a lighthouse. In 1930 it was restored and modified, by opening Windows on the walls. During World War II it was occupied, first by the Germans and then by the Americans. It's really a shame that a tower so beautiful and full of history, both abandoned to degradation, in an area even more degraded.

  • Located in suburban area of Ostia, not explored inside, deserves a visit from the outside anyway. Tower designed by Michelangelo (Yes, that Michelangelo) should be perhaps exploited touristically.
