  • The basilica of San Magno was built over the old Romanesque church dedicated to San Salvatore. Built between 1504 and 1513, the temple is one of the works born in Bramante. Originally, the exterior of San Magno was of brick with terracotta decorations. The church underwent some changes during the 1600s, but the appearance changed again for restoration in the early 1900s. In fact, in 1914, was the exterior of the Basilica, with the prolongation of a span of the entrance hall. The three artistic bronze doors, sculpted by bergamasco Franco learned, are of 1976 to commemorate the eighth centenary of the battle of Legnano. The various panels are an ideal synthesis of history and the virtues of people legnanese. The Bell Tower was built in brick in 1752, alongside the old Romanesque Bell Tower, the remains of which still are seen on the South side of the Church. The Church inside an octagon shape along which to the principal axes are attached short arms, such as to determine a cross, while the corners are open four pairs of low chapels. The magnificent dome is decorated with elements similar to those of pilasters, complicated candelabra that recall the image of the tunnel of a lace. Is the sixteenth-century work attributed to Giangiacomo Lampugnani. Marble marquetry floor white, black and red, with its focus in the Center, recalls in a mirror projection, the design of the dome. The frescoes on the vault, were built in the years 1562-64 by Bernardino Lanino. While the frescoes of the lunettes side, made by b. Lanino, present, left, St Matthew and St John, right, San Marco and San Luca. In the bottom bezel St. Ambrose with the whip, Saint Jerome, Saint Gregory the great, Pope and Saint Augustine Bishop. The frescoes on the walls of the apse are of b. Lanino. On the left wall you can see: the marriage of the Virgin, the visitation, the adoration of the shepherds, the visit of the Magi. Above the window, at the top, the journey to Nazareth. On the right wall the four scenes are: the purification, the massacre of the innocents, the return to Nazareth, the dispute in the temple. The smaller pane at the top represents the flight into Egypt. On the walls, the sides of the altarpiece by Luini, the figure of San Rocco (left) and s. Sebastiano (right). The altarpiece of the apse, depicting the Madonna and child with Saints was built in 1523 by Bernardino Luini. From the gable overlooking the eternal father. In the four knelt side compartments: in the upper Saint John the Baptist and St. Peter; down St. Magnus and St. Ambrose. Monochrome tablets down with Holy characters and scenes from the passion. Gorgeous is the altarpiece of the high altar of 1845, made of silver and brass. The embossing is very rich. The choir of late 18th cent. XVI is attributed to the brothers Coiro. Each stall is differently carved with architectural motif in perspective. The projecting cornice depicts Angel heads from which radiate curvilinear decorative elements. The baptistery chapel has undergone transformations in the Baroque period. In the middle of the second half of the 16th century baptismal font of red marble from Verona. On stand four figures with Sweety foot; from the heads leave festoons of fruit. The tank is topped by a wooden temple with precious reliefs and statuettes. The Chapel is closed by a trait cancelled. In the chapel of St Charles and s. Magno are placed, in stucco frames specially prepared canvas oil paintings of San Carlos that visiting the plague-stricken and San Carlo in Ecstasy. At the base of the Chapel is placed in an urn the relic of Saint Magnus. A Renaissance monument that honors the city of Legnano, his story to his religion, which deserves to be admired in all its glory.
