  • Most important Basilica of Lecco and the territory as the seat of the Deanery of the Archdiocese of Milan. Dedicated to the Patron Saint Nicholas, patron of boatmen and sailors. Attached to the Bell Tower, definitely worth visiting too, the Church is situated on ruins of ancient walls and towers over his city. Visitors can access via a nice double staircase from the square in front of the Lake. Certainly interest the nave with barrel vault where there are several fine frescoes and paintings. Next to it there is the Oratory of St Louis well maintained and preserved.

  • The Basilica of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors, is no exception to the ancient rule of construction on existing bases of the 12th century. On a slightly elevated position nearly Lecco Central today although in the first millennium the difference was even greater than the current 5 metres. However it is enough to make the body to itself and be noticed by far sailing on the waters of the Lake from which you notice well except for his beautiful stairway. Difficult to define the beauty of its façade that would be more or less neo-classical, and that does not make it a fine example of harmony and personality as other churches in the Lario. We emphasize that though this could be due to a fairly unique, linked to the vetoes that over time he received the city of Powers that was subject. The Viscounts initially limited the size inside the walls for alleged need for defense from the Venetian Republic. Later the Habsburgs, that inherited from Venice, for decades exerted the same vetoes issued only during the second half of 1800 when the defensibility of a city was no longer tied to its walls. The Basilica di San Niccolò, as all the city outside the walls he received then a formidable impetus only from 1830-1867 when she was declared no longer interesting as a military fortress and there was a running start to reconstruction and expansion which probably, given even the few means, was influenced by rush. Its interior is striking for the murals and all too rich ceilings, but apart from some pre-existing recoveries frescoes of 1878-1881-1908, is a work of the period from 1925 to 1928 with all the obvious consequences of modern times. Historically remains the baptistery chapel that is native to the thirteenth-century Church as the baptismal font is from the end of 1500. It remains a remarkable example of pictorial continuity along all surfaces available, from the dome of the vestibule to the cycles of the nave, the cupola with its windshields. Very responds to a major key to reading, that of the theme of the triumph of Jesus with many evangelical scenes and 40 medallions of Saints and bishops. Another important issue is that of Madonna and mercy. That's also why in 2016 year of Jubilee is celebrated the indulgence with crossing the Door of mercy (the central one of the Roman Basilica) with a path that goes to the ancient baptismal font and the confessionals, then show up at the altar with prayer for the intentions of the Pope.
