  • Just south of the Arc de Triomphe, is the so-called Porta Rudiae, whose name derives from the ancient Messapian town, located in today's suburb of Lecce, next's original core city. Probably, as in the case of the Arc de Triomphe, this had to be a medieval port. The port collapsed during the seventeenth century and was rebuilt in 1700. The door is clearly Baroque style, and was built when a real defensive function was no longer needed. The façade is dominated by the statue of Saint Oronzo, accompanied laterally by the statues of Saint Irene and san Domenico. The pillars of the door are carved four busts depicting Euippa, Malennio, Dauno and Idomeneo, grandson of Minos and the great-grandson of Zeus, the mythical founder of the city.

  • Ports should be beautiful on one side but here apparently worked out, perhaps to impress the visitor! Also here is this the case. This access to the historical centre shows novice erosion of the less hard (Sandy) stone.
