  • Made up of six African drums cipollino marble, this massive column supporting a Statue of St. Oronzo, patron of the city; 29 metres high and located at the center of the square right next to the Roman amphitheatre, which was built at the behest of citizenship in 1666, as votive offerings. In fact, the Saint is depicted in the Act of blessing the city during the plague epidemic that struck the Kingdom of Napoli causing many casualties and Lecce was spared thanks to his mediation. The original wooden statue, covered with copper and worked by Venetian masters, was partially destroyed in 1737, a fire caused by Fireworks; It was later remade in bronze, designed by Mauro Manieri, and relocated the column in 1739 resulting perfectly inserted in the splendor of this square between baroque churches, Roman ruins and other magnificent buildings.

  • Bella. Nice little story behind this statue, where they say: If you are a university student, you will never watch s. Oronzo, otherwise you do not graduate.

  • Lecce is really beautiful and hospitable, the patron Sant'Oronzo common also in Ostuni BR, here in the square has a majestic high column approximately 30 meters.

  • Perhaps one of the two Roman columns that were in Brindisi to indicate the end of the via Appia, the other is still in Brindisi in his place!

  • The column of sant'oronzo was one of the two columns that marked the beginning of the via Appia in Brindisi. A currently houses the statue of the patron saint of Lecce and the other is in Brindisi in its original position. The square is the heart of the historic centre of Lecce.
