Fascinating look at borax industry and the happenstance discovery of power via steam. A little out of the way though but nice drive

Visit interesting and culturally stimulating
The Museum of Larderello is dedicated to the history of geothermal energy in all its aspects: from research to drilling, use of geothermal fluid systems for the production of electricity, heat and mechanical. A series of miniatures, models, photographs, videos, original tools and machinery show the transformation happened in 150 years of development of the chemical industry in the area. The Museum was founded in the late 50 's and it's now organized within a temporary structure, consisting of two domes, waiting to get back as soon as possible in its natural home: the Palazzo De Larderel, now restored. Leaving the Museum there is a widening: piazza Leopolda. This was and is the center of industrial life. Offices, homes and Church are the backdrop to the columns with the busts of founder Francesco De Larderel, his wife Pauline and the Grand Duke Leopold II, continuing the policy of his predecessors (careful exploitation of the Tuscan production), always considered with interest the borax industry.
