Chiesa di Santa Maria Del Suffragio, L'Aquila

4.8
Santa Maria del Suffragio, commonly called the church of Anime Sante, is an 18th-century church in L'Aquila, central Italy. It was begun on October 10, 1713, ten years after the 1703 L'Aquila earthquake damaged the Confraternita del Suffragio's former seat. The Roman architect Carlo Buratti was charged with the work. In 1770 Gianfrancesco Leomporri added a Baroque façade, and years later, in 1805, the church was completed with a neoclassical dome by Giuseppe Valadier.Being one of the most important churches of the city, Santa Maria del Suffragio also became one of the main symbols of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake when, on April 6, 2009, it suffered serious damages and its dome was almost entirely pulled down by the quake. The extensive damage to the church was a direct consequence of a lack of retrofitting. Although The church received a great deal of funding to be architecturally restored and aesthetically 'upholstered' but lacked investment into the protecting of its structural integrity; which is a disappointment as it was believed by many to be a building of cultural and architectural significance.

  • A few churches have been restored and have opened again after the earthquake in 2009, this is one of them, and quite an impressive one as well. The church has barok decorations, but in subdued...  more »
  • There is a place to commemorate the victims of the 2009 earthquake in L'Aquila, and there is a blue book, which contains the names and face photographs of all the victims. It is a cathedral built for the victims of a major earthquake in 1703.

  • It is a great church in the main square of L'Aquila. Quite all the people of L'Aquila call it Anime Sante church. It was builded in the beginning of the eighteen century in memory of the  victims caused by the earthquake  occurred in 1703. A must to visit. Fantástica chiesa nella piazza principale della città. Ristrutturata nel 2018. Da visitare assolutamente.
  • The church of St. Mary of Suffrage was built in 1713 by initiative by Carlo Buratti (pupil of Carlo Fontana) The white stone facade of Poggio Picenze was developed in 1775 by the Eagle architect Francesco Leonporri, who was inspired by the sinuous harmony of the Borrommimian fomìe and the articulated architecture of Giuseppe Sardi (first and foremost at the facade of the church Magdalene). The church is named after the Virgin of Suffrage, but it is also known as the Church of Purgatory or Holy Souls, in relation to the activity of the Brotherhood to substantiate purgatory souls. The building is set to a Latin cross plant whose only longitudinal aisle, cut by a little transect protruding yes expands sideways into two chapels per part.

  • Beautiful Church located in the central Piazza del Duomo and restored following the 2009 earthquake. Not on the same level as the nearby St. Bernardino and St. Mary of Collemaggio and still one of the few, among the many historical-religious testimonies of which the City of Eagle is rich, to have reopened its doors.

  • Beautiful little church, with a section dedicated to the victims of the 2009 earthquake: it contains the names of all those who died and it is possible to burn small candles in their memory.

  • Seeing the rebirth of a symbol that we had all seen collapse is something difficult to describe. To go through it is to see how much it is possible to reconstruct what appears out together with what is inside, in ten years, with the help of everyone, day after day, with a sincere desire that has united everyone.
