Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio e Porta Santa, L'Aquila

4.8
Admire the remarkable Abruzzese Romanesque and Gothic architecture at Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio e Porta Santa. While parts of the 13th-century church were damaged during the 2009 earthquake, including the cupola, transept vaults, and triumphal arches that collapsed, the striking jewel-box facade remains intact. This site is the resting place of Pope Celestine V, who devised a penitential observation on the same grounds called the Papal Jubilee. During your visit, keep an eye out for the gilded central rose window and the 14th- and 15th-century frescoes. A visit to Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio e Porta Santa represents just the start of the adventure when you use our L'Aquila trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Finally the restoration phase of this beautiful church has been completed and we were lucky enough to visit even out of hours. Remarkable the Holy Door which is located on the left side of the church. To visit

  • Loving the simplicity of the Romanesque style, the Basilica is for me one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. But I was very impressed by the spirituality that pervades the monument. The figure of Peter da Morrone, then Celestine V is so strong that it moves even the least believing spirits. In my opinion there is the same air that hovers in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi

  • Wow what a sacred place what a facade and what a masterpiece. Please go atist once inside.. It is a must if you come to visit L'aquila
  • So pleased this is open again after the restoration works. Some beautiful art inside as well as information on what went on and how they did some of the renovations, after the 2009 earthquake. If you're in L'Aquila you have to see it.
  • Marvelous cathedral with romanesque Templar architecture. Spiritual in its simplicity. A place you must not miss.
  • Visit this Basilica (medieval times) after final restauration. It did take quite a destruction after earthquake in 2009. First time I visited it was around 1974. There is still some work inside including "storic organ" . This Romanesque and Gothic architecture started construction by 1287.
  • It is a fantastic romanic cathedral. Everyone should visit once in her life. It is OPEN. Moreover, there is a splendid park to walk in.
