Scalata al Cratere, Isola Vulcano

(4.9/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Climb to the top of a volcano when you hike Scalata al Cratere. Take the steep climb up, wandering between yellow fumaroles of steaming sulfur. Take note that it may not smell pleasant, and the smell can stay in your clothes, and possibly transfer to other clothes you pack them with. From the summit are views of the sea and neighboring islands, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, and Alicudi. You can even look straight down into the volcanic crater. You will be hiking through black volcanic rock and sand, which may stain shoes. Bring hiking boots, or rent a pair in town for a reasonable price. Make sure to bring plenty of water. Morning hikes are cooler and less crowded. If you go for sunset views, be sure to leave with enough time to get down before dark, as there is no lighting on the path. Plan your visit to Scalata al Cratere and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Isola Vulcano vacation route planner.

  • The ascent to the crater is a walk, suitable for anyone, but that does have tramitos that require your effort. A group of friends went and there was one that suffered a little bit... Precious the fumaroles and views. It is highly recommended, though the back stretches a little more, to turn the crater. No special footwear is required, but it must be closed, since there is loose gravel/stone. You must carry water (much) if we ascend in summer, since the return may be extended with the stops and photos.

  • A one-hour stroll quiet, some a little less under the Sun of August, but the view you can enjoy once you get to the top is priceless. Recommend to start the climb to the mid afternoon, so enjoy then the beautiful sunset over the Bay of ponente. It would be a shame not to make the climb to the crater at least once in their lifetime.

  • Beautiful and interesting excursion, for hikers, and the natural sciences. Kinda devastated the route, without any services information or guides, is an undervalued by operators who might invest a little to enrich the offer
