Climb to the top of a volcano when you hike Scalata al Cratere. Take the steep climb up, wandering between yellow fumaroles of steaming sulfur. Take note that it may not smell pleasant, and the smell can stay in your clothes, and possibly transfer to other clothes you pack them with. From the summit are views of the sea and neighboring islands, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, and Alicudi. You can even look straight down into the volcanic crater. You will be hiking through black volcanic rock and sand, which may stain shoes. Bring hiking boots, or rent a pair in town for a reasonable price. Make sure to bring plenty of water. Morning hikes are cooler and less crowded. If you go for sunset views, be sure to leave with enough time to get down before dark, as there is no lighting on the path. • try and visit when it is cooler. Would be lovely to see the sunset from the top, but would worry about the uneven ground, when walking back down in the dark!
  • Quite an experience worth doing once in a lifetime. The climb is not binding, the important thing is to go with the proper footwear, otherwise it's an easy walk uphill. Nice view from the top and great to see the fumes out of the mouth of the crater.

  • It's a great fitness (about 1h to the top) exercise combined with unique scenery and great practical geology lesson
