Scalata al Cratere, Isola Vulcano

Hiking Trail Nature / Park
Climb to the top of a volcano when you hike Scalata al Cratere. Take the steep climb up, wandering between yellow fumaroles of steaming sulfur. Take note that it may not smell pleasant, and the smell can stay in your clothes, and possibly transfer to other clothes you pack them with. From the summit are views of the sea and neighboring islands, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, and Alicudi. You can even look straight down into the volcanic crater. You will be hiking through black volcanic rock and sand, which may stain shoes. Bring hiking boots, or rent a pair in town for a reasonable price. Make sure to bring plenty of water. Morning hikes are cooler and less crowded. If you go for sunset views, be sure to leave with enough time to get down before dark, as there is no lighting on the path. Plan your visit to Scalata al Cratere and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Isola Vulcano vacation route planner.

  • Good shoes, and preferably a walking pole to help climb the rough path. I was not sure-footed enough to complete the walk, but enjoyed stunning views and lovely wild flowers even on the lower slpes.  more »
  • It takes about 45 minutes to scale the volcano all the way to the top of the crater. It's a delightful hike during which you'll enjoy the vistas of surrounding islands as they open up before you. And ...  more »
