Scalata al Cratere, Isola Vulcano

#1 of 19 in Trails in Sicily
Climb to the top of a volcano when you hike Scalata al Cratere. Take the steep climb up, wandering between yellow fumaroles of steaming sulfur. Take note that it may not smell pleasant, and the smell can stay in your clothes, and possibly transfer to other clothes you pack them with. From the summit are views of the sea and neighboring islands, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, and Alicudi. You can even look straight down into the volcanic crater. You will be hiking through black volcanic rock and sand, which may stain shoes. Bring hiking boots, or rent a pair in town for a reasonable price. Make sure to bring plenty of water. Morning hikes are cooler and less crowded. If you go for sunset views, be sure to leave with enough time to get down before dark, as there is no lighting on the path. • We spent a whole morning to climb, with good pace and well equipped to lightweight boots, the top of the volcano. 14-year-old son had less difficulty to keep their breath. Once at the top we took the path that goes around the Central crater, and requires another dose of oxygen and legs! Exciting then during descent from the top, proceed with caution (to cover the mouth and nose) through the fumes of sulfur to resume the path of descent. Not recommended for small children, the elderly, and when emissions are particularly intense: I remind you that sulphur is a poison and may give very serious problems. In fact I think it's officially prohibited to go through the steaming rocks.

  • To reach the crater of the volcano is a wonderful experience, tiring but rewarded by breathtaking sea views and vision of the crater of sulfur.

  • This is a detour that deserves to be known rather than go on the more expensive Stromboli, less convenient of access also... A crater in the fumes of suffering, a mud bath to the suffers, beaches of black volcanic sand, with geyzers, and nice little village to eat. Access to the crater in barely an hour's walk, to do in broad daylight (and no night!).

  • I loved it!!! I didn't follow the path, I did climb the side of the Vulcano to add more adventure to the trip. Please though do not climbing if you don't have experience on climb. The clay is very fragile and slippery.
  • Climbing the volcano is a unique, charming and affordable for all. Advice to wear comfortable shoes, preferably walking boots. Slippery path but doable even by children. Approximately 1 hour to climb if you walk quietly. If you climb very early in the morning I recommend to bring a small flashlight. Walking in pitch darkness can be dangerous. Don't forget to bring a handkerchief/bandanna to put on your face: once at the top are the beautiful "fumaroles" chug sulphur dioxide, so it is advisable to protect themselves. The show is remarkable and beautiful vistas. I highlight that there are a lot of mosquitoes also on the path of the volcano, so bring a product repellent for the skin. All worthy and highly recommended.

  • It is a pleasant walk to see such an amazing view. If possible, go early in the morning. See the sunrise on the volcano is spectacular.
