Favignana, Isola di Favignana

(4.5/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
A commune spread over three islands, Favignana was once a Phoenician trading outpost. The Romans occupied the islands after defeating the Phoenician fleet in the First Punic War. The Middle Ages saw more conquest with Arab invaders and then with Normans in the 11th century. They built forts here that date back to 1081. Eventually, the commune became a trading outpost again under the ownership of Genoese merchants who used tuna as currency. The attraction is one of the few places left in Italy to still use the ancient fishing technique, tonnara, to catch large numbers of fish. The distinguishing calcarenite rock, or tufo, gives the coast its jagged, white shores. These rocks preclude a wealth of beaches, but you can do plenty of snorkeling and scuba diving. • Really beautiful island rich in greenery and fresh air. The Centre is just a short walk from the port. Not very populated and tourism is in the right measure. It exudes an air of peace and serenity, place to visit if you are in the areas of Trapani. There are several ferries that offer mini cruise and tour of the island.

  • We lived on the island for 4 days in August in one of the most beautiful and new rents rooms (the ancient courtyard room paid euro 100.00 per night.) the island has now taken the place of Lampedusa and therefore everything has become expensive. Renting a scooter in August it can cost 45 euros and this is not acceptable! The food good but you have to know how to choose the right place. Attention! Average prices being a tourist island (the first range from 10/15 euro per dish). It also moves with two euro per day thanks to the bus and the centre allows you to visit the island. The Center in the evening is filled with so many tourists. To visit and not to miss The "former florio." that show watch the stories of those who lived through those times when the slaughter of tuna was the principal resource of the island ... recommended!
