Favignana, Isola di Favignana

#1 of 12 in Nature in Islands of Sicily
Island Nature / Park
A commune spread over three islands, Favignana was once a Phoenician trading outpost. The Romans occupied the islands after defeating the Phoenician fleet in the First Punic War. The Middle Ages saw more conquest with Arab invaders and then with Normans in the 11th century. They built forts here that date back to 1081. Eventually, the commune became a trading outpost again under the ownership of Genoese merchants who used tuna as currency. The attraction is one of the few places left in Italy to still use the ancient fishing technique, tonnara, to catch large numbers of fish. The distinguishing calcarenite rock, or tufo, gives the coast its jagged, white shores. These rocks preclude a wealth of beaches, but you can do plenty of snorkeling and scuba diving. • For a complete visit to the coves of Favignana island with my family (wife, daughter is 2 granddaughters of 8 and 6 years) I opted for a day the boat with skipper! Reservation is made by the staff of the hotel I used "WATER RE STINK" and thanks to the beauties of the island and the kindness and professionalism of our skipper (Joseph) spent a day at the beach! Everyone (even the children) we move with ease in the sea water (we live in another lovely island in the Bay of Naples) and we made some great swims in the waters of CALAROSSA, Cala Azzurra, Lido Burrone, Cala Rotonda and Cala del Pozzo. For breakfast we stopped near the island Preveto where we got acquainted by Dominic (grandson of our skipper) and his son Salvatore that with its large fishing boat making the "Fishing" and was rifocillando one. People of exceptional sympathy that they also did try a pasta dish with garlic, and fish caught in the morning and we were served white wine and coffee too cold! What else I need to bring with us a memory of a great day!!!

  • The water is cold even in August. The island presented as privileged to bikes turns out to be dangerous for young children. Cars, buses, scooters, trucks, to find on small roads do not respect speed limits, it's to avoid cycling with children. The beaches are small, crowded. The Center is lively for dinner at night, choose its nice restaurant for a drink or an ice cream at the end of day. Island limited charm, and the prices are more expensive than on the Mainland.

  • We stayed on the island 5 days in mid July. The island is very pretty, not very handy, especially for those with children, bike runs fine but not really the whole plain!! The beaches are almost always free and wild without services for tourists, this has pros and cons easily conceivable. Are mainly of rocks and reefs, scenically speaking nothing to say, but not always comfortable and there are few beaches where being able to roll out a napkin snugly. The thing I was most disappointed is dirt, water is clear and transparent everywhere, unfortunately in addition to fish we see everything! Another sore point concerns the condo we rented: even this could have been a beautiful apartment, pity it was decidedly unkempt and neglected the limits of decency: sewer smell, smells like mold, the Windows turn out from the humidity, a refrigerator all rusty, a garden with deck chairs old and worn now unusable, broken and rusted washing machine in the garden, outdoor sinks broken and dirty and last but not least, , mice that ran about in the garden. I complained, the landlady told me that the rats are a problem in Sydney and the municipality is not doing enough to eliminate them, but! I'd start trying to delete them from my house ... and I would think twice about renting a place like this. Definitely not so, my friend was staying at the same price in an apartment, so be careful, the smart ones there are also in Favignana.
