Favignana, Isola di Favignana

(4.6/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
A commune spread over three islands, Favignana was once a Phoenician trading outpost. The Romans occupied the islands after defeating the Phoenician fleet in the First Punic War. The Middle Ages saw more conquest with Arab invaders and then with Normans in the 11th century. They built forts here that date back to 1081. Eventually, the commune became a trading outpost again under the ownership of Genoese merchants who used tuna as currency. The attraction is one of the few places left in Italy to still use the ancient fishing technique, tonnara, to catch large numbers of fish. The distinguishing calcarenite rock, or tufo, gives the coast its jagged, white shores. These rocks preclude a wealth of beaches, but you can do plenty of snorkeling and scuba diving. • Visit to a single day in this wonderful island of Sicily. Ferry a little late and time is initially not of the best with a bit of drizzle and clouds. The day is improved by mid-morning and we could get around the island with some cool also because it was the first week of October. Rent a bike for everyone including my son of 5 years. We followed trails and arrived even at Cala Rossa, beautiful must see! Characteristic also the country, worth a stop ice cream/aperitif in the main square!

  • The island of Favignana is small but so easy to turn the whole bike thing that I highly recommend. When you arrive at the port rent a bicycle, there are several places to rent bikes small camping resort stores, you are spoilt for choice so ask before we paid around 10 euros per day but there are less expensive places. Turn it all because it's all to see in tranquility but definitely out of season I dare not imagine in July and August that confusion .... we stayed the first week of October and can assure you that it was sunny and hot very hot but not the heat of July and August ... ... paradise, clear water, few people and it's still completely open until mid-October. It is not, in my opinion a place for children that is, aside from lido burrone is the only beach that you could define that, the others are wonderful coves but maybe a bit uncomfortable for us kids. Bring comfortable rock shoes as there are rocks everywhere. We have been to Cala Calamoni but every corner and every corner of the island is worth visiting Cala Rotonda Cala Rossa the stacks that if you think the faraglioni of Capri is another matter but in positive ... a great place. Guard to go around the island by Peter can be found in the village square, everyone knows him. Villa Margherita is a nice place to visit with its gardens in the quarries. evocative place but the ticket if you're not interested in plants, forget the cost of 20 euros perhaps not worth, overpriced. Favignana is a place of peace (at least where we were there and at that time) to see and live immersed in the clear waters of the sea of Sicily. Fantastic stay there again.

  • Favignana is certainly the most beautiful island I've ever visited. The sea is amazing and spotlessly clean everywhere, the village is quaint little wildlife. The food is yummy and the fish comes alive at the quay of the port.
