Historic Site Specialty Museum
Visit one of the birthplaces of the tuna canning industry at Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di Favignana e Formica, on the island of Favignana just off the coast of Sicily. The 3.2 hectare (7.9 acre) site includes the former factory, which was remodeled in 1878. The Florio family, former owners of the plant, pioneered the now-widespread technique of canning tuna in oil to increase its shelf life. Explore the museum to see artifacts from the surrounding area, from Roman vessels to biographies of former cannery workers. Learn about the history of the tuna industry and the canning methods developed by the plant since its inception. Free guided tours are included in the admission price. • Worth visiting the ancient tonnara di Favignana, now a museum. Here you go back centuries and you can relive the history of the island and the tuna itself, thanks to the careful and comprehensive knowledge of the guides of the Museum. Also of interest is the reconstruction of the last battle of the first Punic War.

  • We have booked a guided tour on the first day of vacation in Singapore because it was too windy to go to the beach. The visit is a must if you want to know the history of Favignana Florio family as there really is a time for Sicily marked throughout Italy. Calogero is an awesome Guide!
