  • For the second time, I arranged a meeting with some sports fans who thought they know Gravina in Puglia, but obviously we had never visited the Foundation. They were delighted and amazed by the discovery and I have made a good impression. The Organization was once more diligent and extremely available: a praise to them too!

  • The Baron Pomarici Santomasi, died in 1917, in the absence of a male heir, left the Palace Avitus, in which he had lived, to the municipality of Gravina, because there was here created a museum. The Museum is really beautiful and worth visiting. On the first floor there is an apartment that Baron used as guest quarters and is decorated with antique furniture. There is a small chapel with an altar of 1600 on which rest some baby Jesus of the Neapolitan school and a heavy silver crucifix. Nice lounge with armchairs and sofas in pure gold and vintage draperies. Brass 1800 's bedroom, canopy of 1600 and a cradle of the Bourbon period. Very nice two drawers in wood and ivory. Impress the wallpapers are original and beautifully decorated ceilings. On the second floor of the building is a vast archaeological section that hosts many exhibits, mostly from the archaeological area of the "everlasting father", but also from Egnatia etc. and from other sites. Enchanted by the beautiful craters beautifully restored. The Baron was an enthusiast of archaeology and bought numerous pieces (then you could). On the second floor there is also an extensive collection of coins really important (Roman, medieval, modern), tools, personal items, funerary furnishings, objects of the Neolithic age. Don't miss out, always on the second floor, the collection of uniforms and weapons and the picture gallery with many works, including the martyrdom of San Sebastiano due to Ludovico Carracci and some paintings of Guarini and then the allegories of the four continents, portraits etc. But the highlight of the Museum is the crypt of San Vito vecchio, which was delivered in the Museum. It is truly impressive. In the middle is Christ pantocrator, hips Byzantine frescoes of Saints and the three women at the tomb of Christ. Are kept apart, also some frescoes from the Church of the eternal father, that is located in the archaeological area. Really important work of planting of the frescoes painted on the rock and removed by cutting the rock itself (the crypt of San Vito Vecchio situated near the cemetery, was in a State of extreme degradation and it was decided then to remove the frescoes that, after doing the tour of Italy, being showcased in various exhibitions, are then returned in Gravina). At the entrance of the Museum, finally, are two large carriages, well preserved and given to the museum itself. You pay an entrance fee of 5 euros. Guided tour with guide prepared.

  • Interesting site in the Centre of ravine again and as almost always absent and corrupt state that fails to protect our heritage entrusted to passion and goodwill of those who work there!!! .. .but the goodwill does not pay the restoration ... ... another missed opportunity to do something good!
