  • If you are exploring the western Sicily, go for it! The difficulties you will encounter to achieve it will be rewarded by this work of Alberto Burri (1915-95) that conveys the anguish for the town of Gibellina, obliterated by the earthquake of 1968. Getting there: from Gibellina Nuova, take the road to Santa Ninfa (SS 188) and from there the SS119. There are some signs that indicate the direction the Cretto. One caveat: the road is in very poor condition, full of holes and deformations. The road is also dropped, but only after the old Gibellina and then you can return the same way (as of August 2017). Before reaching old and the Cretto Gibellina encountered a cemetery that remembers the victims of the earthquake. The work extends on the Hill. I advise you to "get lost" between the concrete blocks and let the brilliant invention of Burri developments its effect: you will be involved! The work was carried out between 1984 and 1989 and completed according to the idea of the artist in 2015. Lighter locks are of the latter period. Sorry that the info point was closed without any indication of hours or more and obviously the whole site is culpably neglected and abandoned.

  • The meaning and the emotions that this site sends you enter to read them in one of the atee reviews. Here I will explain HOW to REACH the OLD GIBELLINA. First tip: don't be like me, do not rely on browser and do not hope to find an address to be set to reach this place. You risk getting lost in country lanes that, after several kilometres, completely disconnected and become impassable because with slopes obscene! I've almost recovered the car and I needed a mechanic. Him, local, I was shown the way that soon we will explain and they advised me to go to both the outward and return. Second: from fast road doesn't take the exit "Gibellina nuova" but go on to "SANTA NINFA" and, if we proceed towards Mazara del Vallo/Agrigento, this means passing below the Star (see photo). Small digression on the attached photo: not having made a personally, the first audience I've found on Instagram reporting the author. Third Tip: at some point of your journey, the road forks and you'll have to go to "PARRUTA", or perhaps with a single R. Hereafter you will find directions to the ruins of Gibellina and the Cretto Burri. Continue for about 10 km on a winding road and that seems to never bring up nothing, at some point, you will see the crack and shortly after you've arrived! I would like to point out one thing that often takes second place: less than one kilometer before the old Gibellina you will find the cemetery where they were stowed the Belice earthquake victims 1,150, object of your visit. Let us not forget that it was first and foremost a human tragedy, and if this review has been helpful to remember also to express a positive opinion! Thanks for reading and enjoy your visit.

  • Fantastic example of landart
  • Beautiful land artwork in the middle of Sicily
  • Remarkable site.
  • Gibellina nuova comes from a tragedy, an earthquake, whose remains are still visible, partly under the Cretto di Alberto Burri (Città di Castello with artist whose common Gibellina is twinned), gigantic monument of death that goes over the streets and alleys of the old city [. It is located in the same place where there were once the rubble, currently "cemented" by the work of Burri. The work appears as a series of fractures of concrete on the ground, whose artistic value lies in the freezing of the historical memory of a country. The crack is one of the largest contemporary art in the world.

  • Because it is more talkative than many words. His silence gives way to intense sensations. The colours are those of the memory
