  • On the night of 5 and 6 June 1860, the expedition of the thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi and directed towards Marsala, departed from this area because secluded enough, but wide enough to anchor the two steamers («Piedmont» and «Lombardo») on which He will embark the volunteers. The monument to the thousand of Genoa is a sculpture in bronze by the sculptor Eugenio Baroni and dedicated to this expedition, not far from the rock from which he departed the expedition of Garibaldi: this work was inaugurated by Gabriele D'annunzio in 1915 he held even the eulogy: memories and enthusiasm to be preserved.

  • This is one of those epic places that every tourist should have the souvenir picture instead there are signs all over town that signals the place and no coach can be stopped because they closed the square which was used to turn around the monument of a thousand ... simply unable to draw attention to a place that has marked the history of our country. It lacks the culture and lack of initiatives and events. ostate not everything I recommend once at this place to reflect and remember their children who were Garibadi the importance of the expedition of the thousand, Cavour, Mazzini young Italy the birth of the Italian Republic.

  • Steer clear of the thousand (in Genoa you will hear call "the monument" or, from young, only "the Monument") is the small promontory from which in 1860 Garibaldi left of Marsala, with the expedition of the thousand. You will find them a monument, from which the nickname of the premises (in truth few people know that the departure took place from the cliffs in front, where there is another smaller monument with a star on top). Recently refurbished (both the monument and the entire rock) is an excellent vantage point from which you can enjoy a view of the promontory of Vernazzola-St. Clare (in my opinion the most beautiful panoramic point of the city). It is also a good place to swim or take an aperitif. I suggest, for those who like to walk, departing from the mouth, take Corso Italy, see Boccadasse, climb to Santa Chiara, get off at Vernazzola, and get the promenade to the monument (it takes about 50 min), and again, for those who like it, continue up to nerves or even Capolungo (1 hour and 30 are you doing and you've seen the entire coast of Genoa levante), and then back by bus. I do often in spring or autumn (summer perhaps is a bit too hot) and I never get tired.
