  • Original castle in two architectures, Angevin and aragonese period indeed, rich in history and with different successions of rulers. Important site for the Italian Risorgimento. Until recently it was the prison of the Italian armed forces where they were locked up disobedient soldiers. Today it is home to institutions and not open to the public. The outside view, especially since the sea is still satisfying.

  • The Angevin-Aragonese castle consists of two blocks built at different times. The first, ranked higher, is reinforced by towers and walls and is known for, in 1870, Giuseppe Mazzini was imprisoned, while the second Angevin, it has a square plan and was built in the 7th century. The Angevin part was the seat of the military prison of Gaeta until recently, and now is the city of Gaeta. In the future this wing will house the Faculty of Marine Science at the University of Cassino. The aragonese wing it currently houses the nautical school of the Guardia di Finanza. Although you cannot visit him inside, except on some special occasions, it's still impressive admire it from the outside with the panorama views from the top of the town where it is located. Picturesque even streets that are woven into its surroundings.

  • A historic castle which was involved in half a millennium of history gaetana and that in the collective imagination of our days is linked to its function as a military prison. The castle is run by the University of Cassino, once completed the restoration, intends to earmark it as seat of the faculties of maritime disciplines. In fact it was the exhibition "will send you to G! -On the trail of the military prison "to give us a chance, last July, of making" unusual journey into the walls of Angevin Castle ". In fact Italian males are well aware of the threat "will send you to Gaeta" that, from the end of 800 until the end of the eighties of the last century, kept them in check during his military service. Organized by the "art treasures" and the Pro Loco of Gaeta, the tour allowed us to make a journey through the history of the Castle. Thanks to some actors whose monologues have dressed the role of the characters that have shaped the history of this place, have been remember the figures by Frederick II of Swabia who built a primitive Castle now destroyed; Alfonso of Aragon, the actual manufacturer of the Castle; Maria Sophie of Bavaria and Francis II of Bourbon the last sovereigns "rulers" on Gaeta. As for the more recent history we listened to the Nazi officer Herbert Kappler, who along with Walter Reder, was a guest of the castle for three decades since the war. Until the late 1980s even Jehovah's witnesses, that by declaring themselves conscientious objectors in relation to military service, were locked up in the military prison of Gaeta; during the 1970s for several years. The University of Cassino with contributions from the Association "art treasures" and the Pro Loco of Gaeta organizes these tours. So the best way to know the dates is to subscribe to the list of the Pro loco of Gaeta. The entrance fee is 10 euro.
