Rocca Sanvitale di Fontanellato, Fontanellato

Begun in the 13th century and mostly completed by the 15th, Rocca Sanvitale di Fontanellato was home of the descendants of the Count of Sanvitale until the 1930s. Now a museum, it also houses an optical chamber that uses mirrors and prisms to project a view of the town onto a wall. Traverse the moat to enter the fortress, which is furnished with furniture and paintings that span the 16th to 18th centuries. The castle-like building also houses a great masterpiece of the Italian Mannerist artist Parmigianino, a room painted with a depiction of the myth of Diana and Actaeon. • If you go to Fontanellato can't visit the Rocca Sanvitale. Historic fortress where the guided tour is very cute thanks to the expertise of the guides who don't make anything boring!

  • Imposing fortress from the 14th century. very well preserved. Monofamilare residence of the counts was Sanvitale until mid ' 900 when Earl sold the Rocca al Municipality who transformed later into a museum. The fortress has square floor plan with 4 corner towers and surrounded by a wide moat with water, once fed by a natural spring, now stagnant. Erected as castrum defensively and later made residence by Saadi who have inhabited for about 6 centuries. The most precious jewel of the fortress is the room of Diana and Actaeon that hosts a masterpiece Il Parmigianino, youth a fresco depicting the myth of Diana and Actaeon, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, commissioned by Paola Gonzaga, wife of count Galeazzo Sanvitale, painted between 1523 and 1524. I suggest the guided tour because the guides, though very young, they are very prepared and very brave in conveying the necessary information. You can choose to visit only the ground floor, including a room of Parmigianino or even the upper floors.
