Abbey of Sassovivo, Foligno

(4.5/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
The Abbey of Sassovivo is a Benedictine monastery in Umbria in central Italy. Administratively, it is a frazione of the comune of Foligno.GeographyThe abbey lies in an ancient oak wood, 6 km from Foligno. Located at an altitude of 565 m on a rocky spur at the foot of Mount Serrone, it overlooks the Valle Umbra.HistoryThe abbey was founded by the Benedictines around 1070, probably by one Mainhard coming from Santa Maria di Sitria. The abbey was based on an existing castle of the Monaldi family, on a site probably used in ancient times by the Umbri as sanctuary. The abbey soon increased its power and prestige thanks to numerous donations. In 1138 its possession extended from Rome (the basilica of Santi Quattro Coronati) to Perugia, Spoleto and Camerino. In the following centuries it had 97 monasteries, 41 churches and 7 hospitals. In the late 15th century the abbey passed to the Olivetan Benedictines. The abbey started to decay from the 15th century. In the course of the Napoleonic Wars, it was partially closed and in 1860, after the fall of the Papal States, its dependencies were divided between the Italian state, the local bishopric and privates. Today, part of the Abbey belongs to the Diocese of Foligno, another part to the State and the third part to a private family.

  • The Church was chiua (restorations), but we were able to visit the chuostro and outbuildings. Surrounded by greenery not far from the city.

  • The Abbey, recently restored, is located near the hamlet of Sassovivo in Foligno, distant from the city and from the noises in a hilly woodland. Mystical place with deep impressions where the architectural beauty of the Abbey and the nature in which it is immersed, which at the same time the island from everything else, provide intimate invigorating path. The cloister is definitely the focal point but the entire complex with the Church is the crypt bascosta inside, need to be explored and discovered. If you are fortunate enough to be alone you can perceive sensations typical of places ascetic. To explore the route upstream at the source of the blessed Alano

  • It never ceases to amaze me. Is a small marvel of art and history in the dense forests of Oaks Foligno mountain. Is an oasis of peace, ideal for a walk, a picnic or enjoy a cool summer afternoon. The Abbey contains some real architectural gems, a cloister, frescoes and environments of particular beauty. Enjoy the views and the extraordinary natural surroundings.

  • In a valley of Oaks and olive trees appears the Abbey of Sassovivo, solitary and bright. Its cloister is worth a trip.
