  • This is a big gate and once you remember that this used to be the entrance to the city you can appreciate that it is a show dominance. If you enter the city from the gate it is kind of a taste of thin...  more »
  • Moving from the historic center on the Golden River Bridge, we rushed away from the tourists in the city where almost no interesting things. But we wanted to look at the remains of the fortress walls that once surrounded the city of Florence. Remains of her not so much, but the most interesting thing about it is Gates who survived quite well. They are pypolnjajut their role. So far in the city it is possible to pass through them. The truth now they rather are purely dekarativnuju role. Because the wall is almost non-existent. Approaching them closely you realize that the wizard who did approached this case thoroughly. Gate thickness inspires respect, and they have survived well enough.

  • Although you have to look for it, since there is something moving away from the historic center, it serves as example of the Roman past of the city.

  • Stayed close to here on our 7 day visit so walked past it on a daily basis. The gates are pretty impressive, so is the intriguing statue of a woman with another statue on her which has two heads. There are several restaurants and little boutiques for those who like to shop. It's also only about a 20 Minutes leisurely walk to the city centre.
  • A kind of a local area with less tourism, small Shops and local Cafés! Very nice to take a break.
  • Great place to get some fresh air and away fro the maddening crowds. But be prepared to walk up hill if this is the place you are going to enter the Boboli gardens and there is an entry fee.
  • I love these old city gates. This is the one that points to Rome.
  • Close to center. Quaint area.

Where to stay in Florence

Variety is not a problem when deciding where to stay in Florence. The compact town center is packed with hotels, hostels, and small inns. The drawback of this upmarket central area is that even family-run B&Bs often cost as much as luxury hotels. For more affordable lodgings, explore the area outside the tourist-driven city center. Staying in one of the city's residential neighborhoods allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life of local Florentines. B&Bs and hotels outside the center offer private parking and spacious rooms, all within walking distance of the main tourist sites.
