Ponte Vecchio, Florence

4.3
Walk across one of Florence's oldest and most iconic landmarks, Ponte Vecchio. Spanning the Arno river in the heart of the city, the 14th-century bridge features a wide, three-arch design supporting a series of historic shop fronts. Stroll the bridge's thoroughfare to peruse shops or see street performances. Visit the secret Vasari Corridor that stretches across the bridge to connect two Renaissance palaces. Antique jewelry enthusiasts may want to keep an eye out for the area's gold and silversmith shops. • What to say about ponte vecchio! It is a must see! It is a main characteristic of Florence! A nice walk especially during sunset time. We were lucky to enjoy the eclipse of august's full moon sunrise....  more »
  • While the view of the water was great, battling the crowds to look at over-priced gold with our sit 'n stand stroller wasn't worth it......too many people that appeared to lack an expected degree of a...  more »

  • The Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest bridges in Venice Italy. It spans the Arno River. The views from the bridge are fantastic. There are many shops along the sides selling everything from jewelry, clothing and food. The atmosphere is festive. It is very popular and crowded. Note: Watch for possible pick pockets. Worth a memorable visit.
  • I believe the Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest bridges in Italy. It is historically famous and well known for being lined with shops and being busy with music or performers. However, we were disappointed by how all of the shops are expensive jewellery shops. No one walking the bridge is going into these shops, rather, the bridge is super crowded and people crowded around where the shops AREN'T in order to take photos. There's also a fountain with a metal fence around it that people have attached locks to as a sign of love and relationships, similar to the bridges in Paris and now all over the world. It just wasn't the atmosphere we were expecting, but still an interesting walk. If you want a better view of the bridge itself, definitely go to the next bridge over for a better look.
  • You can either love the place or not love the place. The place is definitely an attraction for ladies on two fronts: the beauty of the jewellery present there which are truly works of art. You need to understand and see each shop before you decide to buy. The second front is the history of the place. The history and the format beauty of the place is something to know. Men, who are not much interested in the art and jewellery, can spend time with the history itself. There are various restaurants around the place serving authentic Italian food.
  • Beautiful and historic. Around Christmas time they really go all out and it feels almost magical! I would highly recommend going here later in the evening any time of the year. Very romantic ❤️
  • Wow, what a great experience. Of course this bridge is set up to take the money of tourists but sometimes it's worth it to be carried away into the past. Just enjoy the atmosphere, marvel at the river flowing under your feet and feel the history coursing through your veins as your cross this amazing bridge.

Where to stay in Florence

Variety is not a problem when deciding where to stay in Florence. The compact town center is packed with hotels, hostels, and small inns. The drawback of this upmarket central area is that even family-run B&Bs often cost as much as luxury hotels. For more affordable lodgings, explore the area outside the tourist-driven city center. Staying in one of the city's residential neighborhoods allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life of local Florentines. B&Bs and hotels outside the center offer private parking and spacious rooms, all within walking distance of the main tourist sites.
