Ponte Vecchio, Florence

4.3
Walk across one of Florence's oldest and most iconic landmarks, Ponte Vecchio. Spanning the Arno river in the heart of the city, the 14th-century bridge features a wide, three-arch design supporting a series of historic shop fronts. Stroll the bridge's thoroughfare to peruse shops or see street performances. Visit the secret Vasari Corridor that stretches across the bridge to connect two Renaissance palaces. Antique jewelry enthusiasts may want to keep an eye out for the area's gold and silversmith shops. • What to say about ponte vecchio! It is a must see! It is a main characteristic of Florence! A nice walk especially during sunset time. We were lucky to enjoy the eclipse of august's full moon sunrise....  more »
  • While the view of the water was great, battling the crowds to look at over-priced gold with our sit 'n stand stroller wasn't worth it......too many people that appeared to lack an expected degree of a...  more »

  • A beautiful sight to see in Florence! It's an old bridge across a river with traditional houses built on top of it, as well as alongside the stretch of the river; quite a colorful and mesmerizing view. The lights add to it's beauty at night, therefore making it a must visit at the night time as well.
  • This bridge has a pretty great view of the river. It also has tons of shops on it which are neat, if you like gold. This bridge is one of just a few in Europe which have buildings on it. Another neat thing about this bridge is that it is the only one left intact by the Nazis in WWII. Overall, a beautiful place with good views and shops.
  • Very interesting with all the gold shops lining it, and free entertainment from buskers. Still, when you're on the bridge, you can't see the bridge. So it's still better to be somewhere further away where you can actually photograph the bridge.
  • One of the most charming bridges I have ever seen! Must wander on the bridge and take a look at the view of the Arno River. It s exquisite. Also you should head down to the riverside and take a look back at the bridge. The bridge is also full of shops, mainly jewelery shops and souvenirs. And be aware it s always crowded.
  • If you like to walk, you should go walk the streets of Florence! Wear walking shoes. The streets are usually full of people. Very busy and fast paced. Art and famous statues everywhere!

Where to stay in Florence

Variety is not a problem when deciding where to stay in Florence. The compact town center is packed with hotels, hostels, and small inns. The drawback of this upmarket central area is that even family-run B&Bs often cost as much as luxury hotels. For more affordable lodgings, explore the area outside the tourist-driven city center. Staying in one of the city's residential neighborhoods allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life of local Florentines. B&Bs and hotels outside the center offer private parking and spacious rooms, all within walking distance of the main tourist sites.
