Cappella Brancacci, Florence

4.2
#14 of 55 in Historic Sites in Florence
History Museum Religious Site
A side door at the Santa Maria del Carmine takes you into Cappella Brancacci, filled with frescoes by some of Italy's most revolutionary Renaissance artists, and known as “the Sistine Chapel of the Early Renaissance.” Masolina da Panicale's works, including “Expulsion from the Garden of Eden” at the front left, are particularly notable for their emotional realism, which was unparalleled at the time. Michelangelo studied here as a youth, many years before his work on the Sistine Chapel. Pick up the guidebook for information about the biblical stories unfolding in the frescoes. Where to stay in Florence

Variety is not a problem when deciding where to stay in Florence. The compact town center is packed with hotels, hostels, and small inns. The drawback of this upmarket central area is that even family-run B&Bs often cost as much as luxury hotels. For more affordable lodgings, explore the area outside the tourist-driven city center. Staying in one of the city's residential neighborhoods allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life of local Florentines. B&Bs and hotels outside the center offer private parking and spacious rooms, all within walking distance of the main tourist sites.
