Basilica of Santa Croce, Florence

4.7
The burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, Basilica of Santa Croce holds the tombs of such luminaries as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Rossini. The city's principal and the world's largest Franciscan church, the building was completed in 1385. The site's most notable features are its 16 chapels, many decorated with frescoes painted by Giotto and his pupils. The building's design reflects the austere approach favored by the Franciscans, with the floor plan following the figure of the Tau cross (the shape of the letter T), which was the symbol of St. Francis. The church's main cloister houses a simple, unadorned chapel designed by architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Choose from several guided tour options; advance reservations are required. General admission tickets can be purchased at the onsite ticket office, by phone, or online. • This Basilica is huge. Lots of paintings and chapels and floor tombs to look at. They have examples on display of the damage from the flooding of the Arno in the 1960s, plus the new mechanisms put in....  more »
  • Late October 2019 and on my last day in Florence I overheard a lady talking about the burial place of Dante, Galileo and Michelangelo. I ended up asking her and found my way there through a sequence.....  more »
  • Lovely place with such a history! St. Francis saw that poor people used to drink water from a fountain and he ordered to build this church near them. Worth the visit for the price (8 euros/adult...  more »

  • This is a great church to visit not because of the beautiful cathedral. The church is very typical in Italy. What make this church famous is the most famous people in Florence bury here. It is know as temple glory with many glorious people in one place. The know people in the world who are bury there including great artist Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci
  • Santa Croce is so stunning from the square. It's unique 5 point star on the facade is breathtaking. Definitely a stop on any itinerary. One of the points of interest for is that there are famous Italians buried here (kind of like Westminister Abbey) so be sure to see if someone you admire is laid to rest here. Also before entering check to see if any exhibits are closed as was the case during our visit.
  • Beautiful church and a nice and quiet square where you can sit down to have a drink or relax. It's not crowded at all so a real nice opportunity to get some rest after having walked the entire day. If you don't have a lot of time in Firenze, I would skip it though.
  • The Basilica is beautiful. There is an impressive statue of Dante Alghieri out front that is a must see as well. It is advised to get there early as the lines during the summer are very long. Also, tickets may be hard to get if you do not book them in advance. The piazza is really amazing as well. Also very busy with many fun merchants and plenty of good places to eat.
  • This church is very underrated due to being so close to the Duomo. It has a beautiful exterior that is not very crowded. The steps provide a convenient location to eat food in the shelter of the shade it provides.
