#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Fiesole
The Convent of San Domenico is a Dominican convent in Fiesole, Italy, situated between the hill of Fiesole and the suburbs of Florence. It was founded in 1406 and completed in 1435 on the initiative of Giovanni Dominici and the bishop of Fiesole, Jacopo Altoviti, both of them friars at the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence.Fra Angelico was a friar here, and painted several artworks for the convent, including the Fiesole Altarpiece and the Coronation of the Virgin (now in the Louvre of Paris). Pietro Perugino's Madonna with Child between Saints John the Baptist and Sebastian, painted here in 1493, is now at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Also here is the 'Baptism' of Lorenzo di Credi, a free rendering of the Baptism in the Uffizi, the panel attributed to master Verrocchio and to Leonardo himself.

  • At the entrance of Fiesole and was erected in the 15th century. First left Chapel has a Madonna and Saints by Fra Angelico. Being repaired, very vibrant colours is one of his masterpieces.

  • I attend the local couples and friends with for years. friendly staff, simple and informal décor, authentic food in particular first and desserts (my favorite is the magnificent "Coppa San Domenico" with mascarpone). Only downsides the house wine. I recommend it to everybody, great value

  • One of the best hidden jewels of Tuscany. It is so easy to get to with the hop on and hop off tour bus. You can spend as long as you like and have the most amazing ride back down the mountain with the view of the city of Florence. It has never been crowded so you can soak up the history and walker the grounds peacefully.
  • The convent of San Domenico is located between Florence and Fiesole: was founded in the 15th century. It was an important training center for young friars, the most important of which was Antoninus of Florence, Archbishop of Florence and Saint. He lived there also blessed Angelico, who painted the main altarpiece of the Church today in the first chapel on the left and two other plates which have been stolen during the Napoleonic invasion and who now find themselves in the Louvre and Prado). Dell'Angelico remain two frescoes (a large crucifixion detached is today at the Hermitage).
