Chiesa di Santa Maria in Vado, Ferrara

(4.3/5 based on 65+ reviews on the web)
Santa Maria in Vado is a church located on Via Borgovado number 3 in Ferrara, Region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy.HistoryThe church derives its name from a guado or fording that was located nearby. A church at the site was documented since the tenth century, but on Easter of 1171, a miracle occurred when blood spouted from the eucharist during consecration. This made the church an object of pilgrimage. This miracle that appears to confirm transubstantiation resembles the subsequent events depicted in The Mass at Bolsena by Raphael.Reconstruction was started in 1495 under the patronage of Ercole de' Roberti under the designs of Biagio Rossetti. The church was included in the zone known as the Addizione Erculea. The church contains paintings by Carlo Bononi, Camillo Filippi, Prospero Fontana, Giuseppe Antonio Ghedini, and Domenico Mona.

  • The name comes from a Ford (vado) of Po, which was nearby. In 1171 was the site of a Eucharistic Miracle: breaking the consecrated host during a church service, this time it covered the altar he spurted blood bathing. Today's sumptuous Temple was rebuilt in 1495 by Biagio Rossetti. The Interior is richly decorated with three naves, a transept and apse. The apse depicts the glory of the holy name of Carlo Bononi frescoed between 1616 and 1621. The left arm of the transept houses a monumental organ dating back to the 16th century, while the right arm is home to the shrine of the most precious blood, incorporating the volticina, where it is assumed that the blood stains of the miracle are still visible. This rich Chapel is equipped with a ladder to climb to the level of the miraculous spots.

  • Adjacent to Via Scandiana, a few dozen meters from Palazzo Schifanoia, recognizable by a distinctive white marble portal. Still bears the visible signs of the earthquake 2012. The total indifference (if not loathing) of institutions worldwide network operators (ENEL and Telecom) for the architectural heritage of our country can be seen (here as everywhere) in ' embroidery ' cables which – like cracks and wounds of the earthquake – mark the front and side walls. Relevant as this is one of the oldest churches of Ferrara, dating back to 1000, and its name comes from the ancient presence of the Ford of the River (to remember as the monastery of Sant'Antonio in Polesine, not far away, was built on an island). Structured around three naves divided by columns (such as the ancient basilicas), contains a number of valuable works (pale and frescoes) in the 15th and 16th centuries (remarkable ' the Madonna of Constantinople of 1400) and you can see – in the transept – part of the original Chapel (called ' the Prodigy ') where the miracle took place at Easter 1171, remembered every month. For those who love the traditions there are still some rites in Latin. Free access. A short visit is required (when paired with a visit to the nearby Palazzo Schifanoia).
