Chiesa di Santa Maria in Vado, Ferrara

4.5
Santa Maria in Vado is a church located on Via Borgovado number 3 in Ferrara, Region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy.HistoryThe church derives its name from a guado or fording that was located nearby. A church at the site was documented since the tenth century, but on Easter of 1171, a eucharistic miracle occurred when blood spouted from the host during consecration. This made the church an object of pilgrimage. This miracle that appears to confirm transubstantiation resembles the subsequent events depicted in The Mass at Bolsena by Raphael.Reconstruction was started in 1495 under the patronage of Ercole de' Roberti under the designs of Biagio Rossetti. The church contains paintings by Carlo Bononi, Camillo Filippi, Prospero Fontana, Giuseppe Antonio Ghedini, and Domenico Mona.

  • The basilica gets its name from a Ford (vado) of Po, which was nearby. In 1171 was the site of a Eucharistic Miracle: breaking the consecrated host during a church service, this time it covered the altar he spurted blood bathing. It has a very full and rich, unlike the exterior include the work of Balta in the apse depicts the glory of the holy name. In the right side there is the sanctuary of the precious blood, incorporating the volticina, where it is assumed that miraculous speckles are still visible. This rich Chapel is equipped with a ladder to climb to the level of the miraculous spots. This church is quite impressive.

  • Is the Church not far from the city center to be missed. Aside from the Eucharistic Miracle of the blood of Christ for believers there are frescoes of Baloch and many others to see. The outside is almost "trivial" but as soon as you enter you can't help but to issue a "oohh" with wonder and admiration. Recommend a visit with tour guide to appreciate all the nuances

  • The ancient Basilica of Santa Maria in Ford, is a shrine that preserves the traces of the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Fares and tourist in my opinion must visit it. Also there are works of art.

  • Very impressive for a small church. Huge organ and beautiful layout. No charge to get in from what I remember. We enjoyed looking around and history is posted in english as well as Italian.
  • Beautiful.
  • Very nice Basilica but in need of many renovations, maintenance and care. The Superintendent does her best but I think are short of funds, also to accommodate outdoor spaces, rough stairs, square and green spaces. It is one of the few beautiful churches of Ferrara still open to the public after an earthquake in 2011, and this greatly devalues the tourism availability.

  • One of the most beautiful churches of Ferrara. Worth visiting for the miracle of the precious blood, for the pipe organ and the paintings of great value. A charming place

  • Church with beautiful works of Carlo Bononi. Religious treasure because of the Eucharistic Miracle occurred here on March 28 1171.
