Castello Estense, Ferrara

(4.3/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web)
Don’t miss the medieval dungeons of Castello Estense, a moated structure in the center of the city. The castle was begun in the 14th century, after a violent riot convinced Nicollo II d’Este, a local nobleman, that his palace was no longer sufficiently protected to guarantee his family’s safety. Construction began in 1385 under the direction of architect Bartolino da Novara, and a wooden passageway soon linked the Este family’s old residence to the new castle, allowing residents to flee from one to the other. Though many of its sections are now used as government offices, you can still visit the castle’s cross-vaulted living rooms, court kitchens, chapels, and the claustrophobic dungeons, which were once used as prison cells and torture chambers. The site also includes a small cafe and a bookshop. Put Castello Estense into our Ferrara vacation planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • I think that once in a lifetime's worth of going to Ferrara. The city is very pretty, it runs well on foot, thrilled with the bike (many hotels operate freely available). New year's Eve then the show visisbile from piazza castello neighborhood that "explodes and sets fire to" ... a waterfall of fireworks and lighting effects accompanied by music chosen wisely by the organizers is really something magical. Of course it should be very good for cold and frost have sparkling wine for the toast (maybe decanted into plastic bottles to prevent the cops requisiscano controls the whole) If you like the idea begin to arrange for time. already in October the best solutions for sleep are prenotate1

  • We visited the Castle (tail of at least 45 min) on January 1, 2017 in the afternoon: beautiful and impressive, especially from the outside, from the terrace and the tower with views of the city. Interesting, though bare, the visit to the Interior, including the prisons. Almost non-existent.
