Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire, Ferrara
(4.4/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire is the seat of the archbishop of Ferrara and the largest church in the city. Located only steps from the Palazzo Comunale and the famous Castello Estense, the cathedral, built in a Romanesque style, dates to the 12th century. The facade is made of white marble, and features scenes from the New Testament as well as numerous sculptures of its characters. The interior was entirely remade in Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. For a better look at the ceiling painting by Bastianino (inspired by Michelangelo), insert a two-Euro coin into a machine about 50 m (164 ft) from the main entrance on the right: this will cause the apse and the painting to be flooded with light. • Let's say the best, front view, unfortunately it totally covered for restoration by scaffolding. Very beautiful and special the side overlooking the piazza Trento e Trieste with arches, the old lodge and the Bell Tower. Beautiful fresco of the Central apse.

  • From outside the Church looks very beautiful, but unfortunately the façade is covered for jobs they are doing after the earthquake in 2012. Then you can appreciate only the side of the case. Inside is full of works of art to admire, the rooms are spacious, the Church appears to be very large. Very nice is the fresco decorating the apse, shame that you have to pay to see it lit up. Bring 2 € to ensure that light up the lights for 3 minutes.

  • According to insiders is considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals of Italy. The atmosphere inside is special. The details are well kept. Definitely worth getting.
