Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire, Ferrara

4.3
#3 of 20 in Historic Sites in Ferrara
Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire is the seat of the archbishop of Ferrara and the largest church in the city. Located only steps from the Palazzo Comunale and the famous Castello Estense, the cathedral, built in a Romanesque style, dates to the 12th century. The facade is made of white marble, and features scenes from the New Testament as well as numerous sculptures of its characters. The interior was entirely remade in Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. For a better look at the ceiling painting by Bastianino (inspired by Michelangelo), insert a two-Euro coin into a machine about 50 m (164 ft) from the main entrance on the right: this will cause the apse and the painting to be flooded with light. We had ill-prepared our trip and therefore ignore the duomo was in full work and therefore covered. Damage, we have seen nothing of its façade! The inside is not exceptional. But the sides of the building, worth a look because they include shops, with passages under arches! The place is really nice, with a lively place.

Ferrara Cathedral is right in the city centre. The façade is truly spectacular and deserves to be viewed with caution, I recommend to read up first to better understand all the decorations and paintings. Unfortunately, the façade for many months is completely covered for renovation (the Church is open to visitors inside). I don't know when it will end the work, I live in Ferrara, maybe I'll do an update when they remove the cover.

Unfortunately the renovations that among other things completely cover the façade, restrict the visit and judgment. But upon entering you enjoys the rich interior full of precious works of art. Quite impressive.
