Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire, Ferrara

(4.4/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire is the seat of the archbishop of Ferrara and the largest church in the city. Located only steps from the Palazzo Comunale and the famous Castello Estense, the cathedral, built in a Romanesque style, dates to the 12th century. The facade is made of white marble, and features scenes from the New Testament as well as numerous sculptures of its characters. The interior was entirely remade in Baroque style after a fire in the 18th century. For a better look at the ceiling painting by Bastianino (inspired by Michelangelo), insert a two-Euro coin into a machine about 50 m (164 ft) from the main entrance on the right: this will cause the apse and the painting to be flooded with light. A visit to Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Ferrara vacation generator to plot your vacation.

  • The Cathedral of St George the martyr is situated in the city centre, right in front of the Town Hall, in the historic centre of Ferrara. From the car park you can get there in a few minutes, walking and admiring the beautiful old buildings. The Basilica is impressive, flanked by marble Bell Tower, partially designed by Leon Battista Alberti. Too bad you didn't see the facade because currently undergoing renovation. The restoration unfortunately obscures the real beauty of this façade. The Interior, preceded by an atrium embellished by ancient stone and marble. As you enter, on the right, the fresco "Madonna Delle Grazie". The Interior, whose decorations and all date from the 18th and 19th centuries, houses important works of classical tour, particularly interesting is the fresco that covers the vault of the apse, "the last judgment", a masterpiece by Sebastiano Filippi, called "Il Bastianino". Other works are: "the martyrdom of St Lawrence", del Barbieri; The "Chorus" by Canozzi; The baptistery Chapel: the baptismal font was carved from a single block of marble in the thirteenth century. Also houses the tomb of Pope Urban III. I must say that I was fascinated by this majestic Cathedral, is well worth a visit!!

  • Wonderful medieval/historical monument that unfortunately it has front under renovations. You see that is the essence of the city.
