Chiesa di Santo Stefano - Mummie di Ferentillo, Ferentillo

(3.8/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Take an eerie trip to Chiesa di Santo Stefano - Mummie di Ferentillo, a collection of mummies buried beneath the Church of Santo Stefano. Although the bodies weren't mummified when buried, scientists have discovered that a rare microfungus present here resulted in natural, well-preserved mummies. You can still see the hair, beards, teeth, and clothes on the corpses--including a lawyer who met a gruesome death, a mother and her child, and several other people. Try to spot the Chinese pilgrims, too, who died in this location en route. If mummies aren't your cup of tea, stick to admiring the partial frescoes from the 12th-century church. • On a cold Sunday in January, with a group of friends we decided to visit one of the most mysterious but at the same time fascinating sites of Umbria; the crypt of the Church of Santo Stefano di Ferentillo who hosts the famous mummies. We approach the place with curiosity and light-heartedness of any tourist. Already at the time of making the ticket but something in us changes abruptly. The place is cold, very cold and in dim light. The lady who looks after us is a sacred place, respect and asking us not to take pictures. Loopholes enters a frosty air that cripples; the light is Dim because the neon have turned toward the wall. Are precautions taken to remain unchanged after over seven centuries, the environment within which manifested itself one of the most amazing phenomena and not yet unveiled of our land. The teche, open top and bottom to ensure air circulation, hosting many mummified bodies. We remain in respectful silence, we are still faced with the remains of people who have lost their lives. There are a woman wearing the wedding dress again, a French soldier, a young mother died in childbirth with the body of the child. There are several bodies of members of the Chinese community who was traveling around there and there, probably due to an illness, surrendered his spoils to eternity. We can't say or do anything but read the little reminder that they delivered at the entrance and that serves as a guide. The bodies are intact, some still see hair or beard. In some cases, perfect teeth, skin is still attached to the bone. A killer is clearly visible the wound he sustained at the right side when in turn was the victim of a settling of scores. For decades experts wonder about what or who has made possible this process of mummification. The air of the place, a microorganism in the soil or in cave, an esoteric rite. The legend of the place tells that the Earth with which they covered the bodies came from the Holy land. To date, however, nothing has been answered. Few years back it was a trial to try to solve the riddle. To do this was buried an eagle with outstretched wings to dig it up years later and check their State of decomposition. At the time of the exhumation was found in the exact same position and majestic. But, with great dismay, mummified. It can still be viewed at the center of the ossuary located on the bottom of the crypt. After the visit we go out without a Word, deeply impressed. The mountains divided by the Black course we were shown one of their most impenetrable mysteries and touching. Gianluca Paradise

  • This attraction, unknown to many, truly deserves to be visited. Inside a church (also of note) are preserved mummies of those who lived in this area, including some Chinese. There's nothing macabre, although mummies. At the entrance are given a booklet with descriptions and explanations, very useful.
