Fortress of Fenestrelle, Fenestrelle

4.7
Renowned as the biggest alpine fortification in Europe, Fortress of Fenestrelle dominates the hills above Fenestrelle. Often nicknamed "The Great Wall of the Alps," this giant fortress occupies 130 hectares (320 acres) of land. Built by the House of Savoy in the late 17th century, this fortress sat at a strategic point by the French border at a time when Europe was aflame with wars of nation-building. The complex includes three major forts, ramparts, batteries, barracks, powder magazines, warehouses, kitchens, a governor's mansion, a parade ground, and a church. Due to pillaging over time, the fortress is now in a state of preservation and reconstruction: your entry fees will help with this process. • Impressive structure that already alone deserves the trip. When you are accompanied by the visit of the fort, up to the devil's garritta, the enthusiasm, the expertise and the interesting anecdotes of Ashleigh the whole thing becomes even more exciting. 3 and a half hours of very pleasant visit, ended with a great lunch in the club of the fort. I can only add one recommendation: Go there!!!!

  • Built over a century and finished in the early 1800s, it was used to defend the borders of the Savoy kingdom from the French. The part that arrived after the river was blown up by the retreating Germans at the end of World War II. The fortress built by Bertola consists of three forts and various other buildings connected to each other by covered staircases and discoveries that climb along the mountain, in an absolutely natural way, so much so that it seems an integral part of it. On the day we went we were not planned guided tours, but the volunteer present at the ticket office gave us explanations, information material and gave us the opportunity to make a small visit on our own. If you are interested in taking the daily excursion you need to book in advance, to allow volunteers to organize. Absolutely recommended

  • We were at the fort on a rainy day in the week and didn't have a chance to do the full hike. We were a little disappointed, but the helpfulness and competence of the Guide made us reconsider... In a couple of hours spent in the fort we saw wonderful places, known interesting anecdotes and enjoyed the natural beauties of the place. Will definitely be back is we look forward to participating in the historical re-enactment!

  • Amazing! Fantastic! Take either the shortest or the full path up to the top and you'll enjoy a great piece of history. Even guides are cool and very handsome. The forte itself is easy to reach and there's just a park in front of it. Book the tour in advance, especially during summer. Wear comfortable shoes and a camera, then relax and enjoy!
  • Magnificent! Plan goid trekking shoes and eventually a warm clothing.
