Renowned as the biggest alpine fortification in Europe, Forte di Fenestrelle dominates the hills above Fenestrelle. Often nicknamed "The Great Wall of the Alps," this giant fortress occupies 130 hectares (320 acres) of land. Built by the House of Savoy in the late 17th century, this fortress sat at a strategic point by the French border at a time when Europe was aflame with wars of nation-building. The complex includes three major forts, ramparts, batteries, barracks, powder magazines, warehouses, kitchens, a governor's mansion, a parade ground, and a church. Due to pillaging over time, the fortress is now in a state of preservation and reconstruction: your entry fees will help with this process. Looks nice, but everything is currently closed down due to Corona or something. There where no information available, so you could only get to the first courtyard and Walk around. Took 5-10 minutes to see everything. Spend about 45 minutes there, to take some photos, walk around the Place 3 times to see if there was some hidden path leading to the rest or if it was indeed closed everything.

Its an absolute marvel. Walking the grounds with so much history. To think of the hardship and craftsmanship put into this astonishing structure is out of this world. I highly recommend a visit. If you have a campervan then stay in the carpark for one of the best views around. The mountains surrounding this building are breathtaking. Follow our adventure on instagram ( the_rusty_van ) we are a travelling family 😄

It is good to see it from forte mutin on the other side of Fenestrelle... Stop for a great capuccino at Rosa Rossa on the way

Unfortunately it is not possible to visit the sight on your own. There is a guided tour once a day at 15:00. There is a challenging footpath besides the fortress.
-
Surprising military fortress. I strongly suggest the guided tour
