  • Built in 9 a.d. (the dating is derived from the inscription on the frieze) where the Via Flaminia became the decumanus maximus, the Arch of Augustus, with its blocks of Istrian stone, is a symbol of Fano. In Roman times was the main route into the city, although there were at least two more doors. Has a central arch larger and two smaller side. Dedicated to Octavian Augustus, later it was rededicated to the Emperor Constantine with a new inscription on the attic, without erasing the previous one. Unfortunately the top of the arch is destroyed, but the rest of the structure is well preserved. Next to the arch stands the Church of St Michael: on the front is visible a bas-relief of the arc before the destruction.

  • This magnificent Roman gate gives a sense of the importance of Fano as a Roman stronghold. The town is completely encircled by walls and its grid iron streets are bustling with life in the evenings.
