Castello di Duino, Duino
(4.5/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Standing tall on the cliffs over the Gulf of Trieste, you'll find Castello di Duino, a 14th-century fortification that's been owned by the Della Torre family for over 420 years. Since 2003, it's been open for tours. Visit over 18 of the castle's rooms, where you'll find the spiral Palladio staircase, the 1810 forte-piano played by Liszt, and staggering sea views from the towers. Outside, explore the multilevel park where you'll stroll under cascading Mediterranean flowers and take in a wealth of statuary. You'll also find a bunker built during World War II, as well as a bookstore and snack shop. Looking out over the rocks, you'll see the ruins of the old tenth-century castle originally built on this spot. With our international travel planner, Duino attractions like Castello di Duino can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Ride unguided but very well marked, allowing a ride in complete independence. Is divided into several parts: the lookout with stunning views, the bunker, a tower with view of World War I and the catellus. Well worth the price of admission. To enjoy the view I recommend going on a sunny day. Alongside the Rilke trail

  • Owned by the family of the Tower, this castle is one of the most beautiful in the region. The complex was built at the end of the fourteenth century, replacing an older Castle whose ruins are still visible on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. The Interior of the castle is full of suggestions, having hosted over the years personalities like Johann Strauss, Franz Liszt, Mark Twain, Paul Valéry, Gabriele D'annunzio, Rainer Maria Rilke, Eugène Ionesco and Karl Popper. From the garden you can enjoy a splendid view of the Gulf of Trieste. Also of interest is the small museum, housed in a bunker, built during World War II into the rock overlooking the sea.

  • It is rare to see a castle so well preserved. It is rich in history, struck the bunkers dug into the rock and all boards on the Nazi occupation. Beautiful view of the sea!
