Cathedral, Crema

4.5
Crema Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Crema, northern Italy. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it is the seat of the Bishop of Crema.HistoryThe first cathedral in the town was destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa in 1160. A new building was begun in 1185, but construction was halted in 1212, not to begin again until 1284 but in Gothic style. The church was finished in 1340, with the addition in 1385 of a lengthened apse and a crypt. The façade is in typical Lombard Gothic style, with a single portal surmounted, in the lunette, by sculptures of the Madonna and Child and Saints Pantaleon and John the Baptist over a frieze with the faces of saints. Over the portal is a large marble rose window, flanked by mullioned windows. The façade terminates in a loggia with small marble columns. The bell tower, on the right side, dates to the 14th century, while the octagonal upper part is from the 17th century. The Gothic interior has a nave and five aisles.

  • Very nice, worth knowing. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is mentioned in documents dating from 1098.

  • Externally the property is beautiful, dominates the city's main square. Inside there are many stained glass Windows and frescoes.

  • The square around is quiet, livable and recalls the splendour of yesteryear. The Interior is austere, sober, cold, emotionally engaging: not everything could be "visiting Prague" medieval ... I loved it so much!

  • Beautiful Cathedral in the center of cream. It has a three naves: the central one ends with an apse Cistercian-style flat while the side chapels were completed. The massive columns that divide the naves are leaning toward the middle of cylindrical columns that go towards the bow sideways with pointed arches. The times of each span of the nave are cross vaults. The pillars supporting the triumphal arch feature different capitals. The right one, it also has an attack of the triumphal arch lower. Fenestration of the nave presents for each Bay: at a lower level than two Lancet Windows; at the top level a mullioned window that gives light inside. From the outside you appreciates the façade and wind, tripartite by large arches in Romanesque style, as are the Romanesque portal with semicircular slotted archivolt, the capitals in plant motifs and decorative Loggia cuspal in thirty-three marble columns. Typically Gothic is instead the central rose window in Saltrio with sixteen columns radially and clasped round arches.

  • Very nice, structurally and artistically. A peculiarity of the 33 columns at the top of the main façade above the main entrance.
