  • The power of Abbesses Mitrate the first appointed since 1271 by Pope Gregory x a Cistercian nun arrived from the East, named Dameta Palaiologos. A story Badessale full of contraversie of power that lasted for five centuries, until 1810, when g. Murat issued the order to abolish the "Nonstrum Apuliae"

  • Very serene and peaceful place. Not your usual tourist location but definitely worth a visit, especially if you need some space to mull things over, gives you perspective.  more »

  • Chocolate monastic occupies a large portion of the historic centre within the megalithic walls, of which encompasses large tracts, partly visible. The Church contains a portion of the walls of the 11th century. The monumental entrance of 1658, has a pair of lions that are grafted two Corinthian columns and an elaborately decorated porch. At the entrance stands a Baroque bell tower whose top is covered with tiles in two colours. The same tiles lining the cupola that opens onto the central nave. The three-nave interior is represented by rectangular classroom adorned with Baroque decorations: the apse was removed in the 16th century to facilitate the construction of a large central altar. Among the altars, those of Saint Benedict and Saint Blaise retain two canvasses by Paolo Finoglio. Other works are attributed to Carlo Rosa and Nicola Gliri. Beneath the Church is a crypt of the 11th century, dedicated to St Michael, with two naves and round arches. The medieval cloister, dating from the 11th-13th centuries, has a trapezoidal shape. The twin columns supporting the porch have carved stone capitals and one in particular, is carved a rare example of maze. [4] Part of the monastic complex now houses the archaeological museum. In the monastery were buried the count Giulio Antonio, "Guercio delle Puglie" and his wife Isabella Filomarino, along Regent in the County. [5]

  • Entering the cloister you'll immediately notice of being immersed in a small but nice garden where you can stop to contemplate the beauty of nature

  • The colors of the dome are fabulous and the monastery is spectacular. Its cloister is beautifully maintained, there is a lot of peace inside.
