Villa Olmo, Como

4.4
#2 of 13 in Sightseeing in Como
Architectural Building Tourist Spot
Built in 1797 as a summer retreat for the aristocracy, and named for an elm that once stood at the heart of the gardens, Villa Olmo is now property of the municipality of Como. Neoclassical in style, the villa is only open during exhibitions, though the lakeside gardens are open to the public at all times. Enjoy a drink at the open-air bar in the garden, or relax on the lawns. Check online to see the schedule of events and exhibits. Only about 2 km (1.3 mi) from the heart of Como, it is an easy walk along the lake to get to the villa. • We walked across the boardwalk to reach the Villa but at this time it is being renovated and access was impossible. We enjoyed a beer at the local Beach Bar (with Lido) and the view of the other side ...  more »

  • The villa is set in a beautiful place with breathtaking views of Lake Como and the mountains surrounding it. A few seaplanes were landing on the water while we were there. Unfortunately the villa was closed due to some renovation work going on. But we got a good look at it from outside though. It has been used as a setting for various Italian films.
  • Beautiful grounds and house. It's a lovely walk from Como to there along the lake. We didn't get to go in as there was an event on.
  • Attended the Delbo wedding in May. It was held at the gazebo in the garden but the weather was terrible. Heavy rain (which is good luck for a wedding) but not the guests. The Villa Olmo staff rushed to provide umbrellas to the wedding party. Their service was exceptional. The setting breathtaking and a good time was had by all.
  • Huge fancy villa, often open for modern art shows or book fairs.
  • The surroundings is lovely and relaxing. I particularly like the fountain in the park.

Where to stay in Como

Indulge yourself by booking a luxurious suite at a lavish hotel right on the shores of Lake Como. Pricey hotels and private villas may provide an ideal lakeside setting, but you can save money by staying at a B&B in the city of Como itself. The city is much less expensive than the resorts of the so-called "middle lake," but be sure to book early. Even less expensive is staying in Milan, from which you easily access the lake district by train or car.
