#1 of 44 in Museums in Abruzzo
Looking out above the Gran Sasso Mountains, Fortezza Museo delle Armi Civitella del Tronto is a marvel of military engineering dating back to the 12th century. It's since been renovated, but still retains its Renaissance style. The elliptical fort contains two squares, one used for the training of troops and the other for ceremonial purposes. To get here, walk up the steep Ruetta, known as the narrowest street in Italy and originally meant to keep enemies from gaining access to the fortress. • This extraordinary fortress is really very significant, not only because of its history, that of being the last bastion to defend the Kingdom of Naples during the so-called wars of independence. The place is impressive for its size and for the significant importance of the fortifications, but it is also striking for its extraordinary location, crowning a Hill last Apennine foothills prior Adriatic Sea overlooking an ancient and authentic village. The local white stone fortress develops on the crest of the hill with a longitudinal shape, with its squares of weapons which take place at different altitudes, resumed in different circles of fortifications, to the top of the hill with the Governor's ruined buildings, the Church rebuilt, troop houses now used as Museum and temporary exhibitions. The great flag of the Kingdom of Naples that still waving in the stands with the white rich Bourbon coat of arms of the rehabilitative power of bring back in time as the Bell that adorns one of the stands reminiscent of the many heroic Patriots of every part. And to major Tiscar United before the surrender, last Commander is dedicated the Museum which in addition to arms preserves memorabilia of Bourbons and partisans in a spirit of now more than a century old homeland drive.

  • A great Citadel with a fortress really full of history and beauty. Really recommend it because it is the encounter between the work of nature, with fantastic view from the sea to the mountains, and the work of man as this magnificent Citadel.

  • A fortress which is well worth a visit. Impressive, and well structured. For a physical need at least 1 hour. Responsible for the site and the Museum of arms. Also of interest is the cistern and the dungeons.

  • It is in excellent condition, it helps to give you an idea of how it was when it was in operation. In addition to the beautiful views of the surrounding area.

  • Must-visit place if you are in the area. Really impressive. The Museum is well cared for, perhaps the Kingdom of the two Sicilies a bit mistreated, but we know that history says whoever wins the war.
