  • If you are passing to Civita Castellana don't miss this valuable monument of great artistic value. The Cathedral of Civita Castellana is also known as the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. It was built by one of the most important families of Roman marble workers, the Cosmati in Romanesque style in the late 12th century; renovated between 1736 and 1740, original-era are today visible parts. The façade is tripartite and on it stands the brick Bell Tower open by three orders of mullioned Windows; a grand staircase leads to the porch, where are preserved archaeological finds from various periods, with architraved columns and with a large median arch decorated a blue mosaic time written in gold; the portico, probably the most important work of the Cosmati, za Jacobus Laurentii (Iacopo di Lorenzo) and his son Chang and is dated to the early 1200. In the area of many restaurants and taverns where you can enjoy the tradition and simplicity of authentic cuisine.
