In this museum I learned more history of the post roman times in Italy and western Europe than I did in school.  more »

The Archaeological Museum of Cividale documents properly two distinct eras of local history, the Roman one (the city was founded by Julius Caesar) and the Lombard, which was the capital of the Kingdom. If the Roman collection is certainly interesting, the Museum deserves especially for the memorabilia longobardi, little present elsewhere. Is rich especially the witness of the grave goods of the nobles of this people, but there are real works of art (especially religious), a far cry from the classic style and characterized, as we read in the history textbooks of art, from a generalized "horror vacui". Reasonable price (4 euros, with possibility to buy a ticket from 9 euros for this Museum, that Christian and the Longobard Temple) staff. Only downsides, a geographical map that swaps resoundingly Lucca with Pistoia. I will see if in a Tuscan Museum they confused Udine and Trieste as they would take in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The Museum is vast and very interesting, full of artifacts found inside the tombs Lombards. Certainly worth a visit as we treated ourselves to us since the exceptional nature of the exhibits, not found in other parts of Italy and very useful to reconstruct the life and society of the Lombards, too often overlooked by most people. You will also find beautiful Roman mosaics from the elaborate designs. For lovers of history and art, the Museum is a must!

In the basement are the remains of the patriarchal Palace, on the ground floor the Roman square capitals-Renaissance and the section about the Jewish cemetery. The second puano is dedicated to espisizionedei rich funerary Lombards in Cividale, an important collection of gold coins lingobarde and a section is reserved alka bronze decoration of the Forum of Italium Carnicum
