Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi, Cerreto Guidi

4.3
#43 of 89 in Historic Sites in Province of Florence
Castle History Museum
Once a home to the powerful Medici family, the World Heritage-listed Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi features an extensive collection of village artifacts and serves as the focal point of the surrounding town. Originally finished in the 16th century as a hunting lodge, the mansion boasts elaborate brick staircases, a stately exterior, and lush grounds. Stop by the villa and explore the on-site museum documenting the history of hunting in the region. However, it's the mystery surrounding the death of Isabella de Medici that really put this place in the public eye: legend has it that her vengeful ghost still haunts the mansion. Our Cerreto Guidi vacation planner makes visiting Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi and other Cerreto Guidi attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Amongst the Medici villas this is perhaps the least celebrated. In fact, compared to The rocky ground or in Poggio a Caiano, this is a "minor" villa surely in size; but not in the history from which he originated and let alone the uniqueness of the place and the relationship with the landscape. Maybe this is the villa farthest from Florence and less frequented by tourists, but worth the trip, if only for the curious 19th century frescoes by Ruggero Focardi, a student of Telemaco Signorini, who paints figures clearly in one of the rooms on the ground floor of the 19th century; or to access from the villa to the matroneum suspended over the adjacent church of San Leonardo through the loggia of the courtyard garden, created after the first 16th-century building. This without considering the interesting equipment of furniture and art accompanying architecture. In short, the visit is worth the effort to reach Cerreto.
