Castello Piccolomini is a castle in Celano, Province of L'Aquila .
The building of the castle took place in several stages. In 1392 Pietro De' Berardi built the walls of the castle and the first two floors of the building. In 1451 Leonello Acclozamora built the main floor and the four towers at the corners. In 1463 Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini completed the building as seen today, with an open gallery in the second floor of the courtyard and improvements in the walls around the castle.
The following families succeeded in the castle (like Sforza-Cesarini and Dragonetti) didn't changed further the structure of the building. A deep restoration took place since 1940, put on hold during Word War II, restarted in 1955 and completed in 1960. Now the building is used as offices for the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, in addition to a museum of sacred arts.
The main building has a rectangular plan, with the longest sides facing north and south. The internal courtyard hosts a well and it is surrounded by a colonnade.
The building is protected by irregular walls with several towers, part of them with a squared plan, and other ones trunk-conical shaped.

  • ... both for the location, for the structure itself and for the work done for years with the aim of centralizing all the most beautiful and interesting treasures of Mersica and beyond. At the level of large museums visited all over Europe ! Good.

  • In fact a beautiful castle.... interesting the history of reconstruction after the earthquake of 1915 ...and I would make more obvious the history of the drying of Lake Fucino... would be interesting. For the rest the visit costs 4 euros .... It's not much but for what it is I wouldn't charge the kids at least. The halls are a bit sparse and some things lack explanation. moreover, no one is watching.... with a little mastery... It can be valued in my opinion... Staff however friendly....

  • We visited the castle on August 19, honestly, as a fallback of a rainy day. Sorprendetemene, on the other hand, turned out to be a beautiful find! The site is well maintained: the price of the ticket contained (4th adults, free children). After the entrance to the ticket office there is the passage on the walls which is pleasant and fun for children. The interior, from the courtyard to the halls, is airy and excellently described by the information notes that lead you easily to imagine the castle and its history. The two permanent sacred and archaeological exhibitions that complete and enrich the visit make it varied and interesting. In my opinion, there is a lack of any guides that best accompany the tourist.

  • Great for kids and free for those under 18. Lots of places to run around and great views of countryside. Also, excellent museum with religious and archeological artifacts. Parking available right in front or in the piazza below.
  • Great views, but missing real castle atmosphere
  • Beautiful castle in my home town!!
  • Amazing view and collection
  • Awesome castle to visit. There are no crowds, small children are free and regular tickets are inexpensive. Next to a nice little town.
