  • a few kilometres from Cefalù Centre chiassioso eight hundred meters high on the Madonie, leaning against the Pizzo Santangelo, this sanctuary dedicated to the assumption, patron saint of the city. The first core sacred dates back to the sixteenth century after Christ. Today is a place of pilgrimage and here you breathe a deep spirituality. The name may be a transposition of "Gibel el Iman", which in Italian translates to "mountain of faith." This means that even the Arabs gave this place a special sacredness, despite being a Catholic Church. Come in and find ... that you don't expect. Behind the altar, in front of the entrance there is a wooden Tabernacle probably Renaissance, which merges with a wooden structure that houses a painting of the assumption of Virgin that documents attest to be present since 1613, very beautiful and full of light. To his left is a fresco, Byzantine, detached from a church in Palermo and place in this sanctuary; still, a beautiful, and that is an understatement, "Crucifixion" from Byzantine polychrome wood, also; Legend has it that Christ spoke with a monk claiming that the place needed to be dedicated to "his mother" ... The two most impressive are a canvas, "Ecce Homo", painted by the priest s. from Gratteri. Is the image of what he claimed to have seen inside a Particle, the colors used are juice of herbs and flowers! The other is a life-size statue of Antonello Gagini placed inside the Chapel to the right of the entrance. Is perhaps the most beautiful work of this sculptor that we have seen in our long ride in Sicily. The statue is greeted by a polychrome marble altar, with spiral columns redhead, with three orders. The altar is complemented by two side sculptures. The place is surrounded by a forest and overlooks a magnificent panorama. Seems to be suspended in the sky, and the mysticism that pervades brings you closer to Supreme, regardless of religious belief. It was a particular visit, impressive and with hindsight, is a must. • Sanctuary in the quietness and the freshness of a thousand meters and the forest. Suitable place for meditation. Pity that the toilets were closed and there was food and beverages. Open only for souvenirs ...

  • Sanctuary beautiful and well cared for. Leads to prayer, meditation and contemplation. The strategic position within the Madonie National Park makes it one of the most charming places I've ever visited. Even religious ceremonies are well-run and engaging in their sobriety. It is worth to go there.

  • If you are on holiday in Cefalù recommend to visit this Sanctuary which is only 20 minutes by car. Surrounded by greenery, offers a moment of silence and meditation. Shame we could not visit the monastery Museum, as it was closed for lunch. Maybe for the tourists who come specifically, you should do every day.

  • Peace, tranquility and a wonderful view. from the sanctuary you can admire much of Palermo being 800 metres above sea level. If you continue to climb the view definitely improves because of the Madonie. The Church visited on weekdays is quiet and there is virtually none, formerly a Benedictine monastery. Makes the visit in spring or summer.
