La Rocca, Cefalu

4.5
#2 of 12 in Historic Sites in Cefalu
The lookout point of La Rocca can be reached from the town's main street. Follow the street signs to the rock's path and the Tempio di Diana. Halfway up the path, you'll get a view of the town. Head farther up to the entrance of the temple's ruins. Pay a small fee to get into the archaeological site and take in the 360-degree view of the town. On the way to the temple, you'll pass other ruined buildings that stood before the Norman conquest in the 11th century. • The ascent to La Rocca is highly recommended as a complement to the visit from the Duomo and the historical centre of the town. In less than an hour you reach the top (a part by stairs and a part by road), where there are remains of a defensive Castle and from where you can see spectacular views of coast and of the people, but not from its historic centre. Climb (or descent) lies the archaeological site of the Temple of Diana, from where there are fabulous views of the sea, the Duomo and the historical nucleus of the town. In March their opening hours was now from 9 am to 4 pm, every day of the week. Access costs four euros per person.

  • This activity is highly recommended if you like to hike! The trail starts from some steep steps in Piazza Garibaldi. We easily walked there from the Cefalu train station. (It was about an hour train r...  more »

  • Amazing views. The walk up really isn't so bad! Probably 30-40mins. Just where practical walking shoes.
  • Because I was born in Catania, Sicily being Sicilian I know she's beautiful .... The Governors of the various provinces and municipalities. leave something to be desired ... a place like Sicily where there's art culture ... and amazing food. should live big just.. instead leave everything to chance. I do not add garbage on that you see in the Sicilian city.

  • Beautiful view from the top. The whole panorama of impressive from the top but very steep and dangerous path up from the goal some 40 min uphill spin Rocky ścieszką, the best part is that no one does too much photos only ruins of the town. Expedition for persistent and patient. Do you remember about the water because the path is almost all in the Sun. I added 2 photos are those small stones (ścieszka)

  • The panorama by climbing the rock of Cefalù is breathtaking, especially leaning just over the wall that turns around and spying on 150 meters below you to Cliff the historic city forged by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and by the Norman Roger II of Altavilla. The place is defined by the guides as "Parco archeologico della Rocca", since it still contains the remains of the ancient Byzantine fortification and megalithic rocks dating from the 4th century BC; that's why we expect boards intact, protected walkways, superb restorations, paths in functional order, reception areas. At least, to justify the "entrance fee" that costs 4 euro per person. Unfortunately, the reality of the fortress belies its (allegedly) status of ' Archaeological Park ', bringing visitors to wander among the remains of stone walls, counting only on the explanation of explanatory panels that, if not be faded (and partly illegible) for the action of the Sun, are in some cases slaughtered. Clambering down the path which takes only 40 minutes to reach the old Castle, the same path becomes increasingly wild and in some cases slippery and obstructed by shrubs; While, right on top of the rocca disappears: there are safety walkways that allow to admire the remains of the Castle, but those who want to venture can literally climb (teetering) on the ancient ruins, emerging from the vegetation allowed to grow wild. The descending the top leads to a crossroads, intercepting another rambling path that enters the Woods below (again, no shortage of plants falls and some waste sprouting greenery), reaching the area where there is a megalithic structure: it is the Temple of Diana, dating from the fourth century b.c., left to itself and marked by a crude intervention of "restoration" worked with brick and concrete (!). Homemade repairs which unfortunately is also found in some watch towers overlooking the blue Mediterranean. There where the Park reserve its best side: the breathtaking view over the historical centre of Cefalù, which looks like a dream 150 metres jutting out below. A view though that since October 2013 to every tourist costs just 4 euro, since before the salita alla Rocca was free.

  • Amazing experience to go up at La Rocca. A view of the sea and the small town of Cefalù. The mountain is about 270 m high and difficult to walk on. Trails are steep and rather slippery. Good shoes are recommended. Take with water (none are available). Admission: 4 € for adults and two euros for retirees. Do not go up if you don't have good stamina and patience.
