Museo Civico Castello Ursino, Catania

3.9
#3 of 17 in Museums in Catania
A massive castle in the center of Catania, Museo Civico Castello Ursino offers a medieval experience just feet from the sand-studded sea. Built around the year 1250 as one of the royal castles of Emperor Frederick II, King of Sicily, it is one of the few buildings in Catania to have survived the earthquake of 1693. When first built, the castle held a strategic military position overlooking the sea on a cliff, but due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, it is now 1 km (3,000 ft) inland. Inside, you can visit the Catania Civic Museum, which displays artwork and artifacts from the castle as well as the Catania area. These works represent the diverse influences throughout Sicilian history. Plan to visit Museo Civico Castello Ursino during your Catania vacation using our convenient Catania tour itinerary planner .

  • An odd and not particularly well organised mix of exhibits and sweletringly hot on the day we visited.  more »
  • Visited a few days ago, is situated in the Centre of Catania in a nice square. Tickets cost €6 per person and is spread over three floors, on the ground floor you can admire some historical artifacts including the alleged Robert of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In the upper floors you can admire the works of the exhibition which at that moment is in progress. The Norman castle is still very charming and well worth a visit.

  • Ursino castle was built in the first half of the 13rd century, and by the sea, to protect the city from attack from the sea. After the eruption of Mount Etna in 1669 year and earthquakes that occurred thirty years later, the castle was damaged, turned out to be a few kilometers from the coast and lost its importance. Now here is the urban archaeological and historical Museum. Some exhibits are interesting, but in General not Exposition. Much more interesting than the castle itself. Unfortunately, on the roof of the Castle passage was not. And I would like to! Maybe after the end of the restoration that will come.

  • The civic gallery is good but we really appreciated the temporary photography exhibition at the last floor, so my advise is to check out what temporary exhibit they have when visiting.
  • Plenty of art and artifacts, but little that I found really interesting. Mostly unremarkable religious art from the middle ages, but the few paintings of the lives of regular Sicilian people were interesting.
  • More a expensive dark art museum than a tourist attraction. No harmony between the monument and exposition. Not my cup of tea.
  • A civic museum, Castello Ursino, which is a medieval castle itself. I really enjoyed a variety of precious collections. It was more than I expected.
  • A museum of mostly old pictures and other relicts. Only italian descriptions. At least there was a small Warhol exhibition on the top floor and a good view over the city. The castle itself is not worth the visit.
