Museo Civico Castello Ursino, Catania
Categories: History Museums, Museums
A massive castle in the center of Catania, Museo Civico Castello Ursino offers a medieval experience just feet from the sand-studded sea. Built around the year 1250 as one of the royal castles of Emperor Frederick II, King of Sicily, it is one of the few buildings in Catania to have survived the earthquake of 1693. When first built, the castle held a strategic military position overlooking the sea on a cliff, but due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, it is now 1 km (3,000 ft) inland. Inside, you can visit the Catania Civic Museum, which displays artwork and artifacts from the castle as well as the Catania area. These works represent the diverse influences throughout Sicilian history. See Museo Civico Castello Ursino and all Catania has to offer by arranging your trip with our Catania tourist route planner.

Great castle which was on a peninsula surrounded by the sea, now firmly in the middle of the city due to volcanic activity. The yard was used as a prison and had the graffiti to show for it.
Nice museum when bored in the city
I hadn't done my research. I was hoping for a castle and its history but this is actually an art gallery in a castle! If you're looking for modern art I'm sure you will enjoy. If you're looking for a castle I'd steer clear!!
Great day for a visit
