Museo Civico Castello Ursino, Catania

(3.8/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
A massive castle in the center of Catania, Museo Civico Castello Ursino offers a medieval experience just feet from the sand-studded sea. Built around the year 1250 as one of the royal castles of Emperor Frederick II, King of Sicily, it is one of the few buildings in Catania to have survived the earthquake of 1693. When first built, the castle held a strategic military position overlooking the sea on a cliff, but due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, it is now 1 km (3,000 ft) inland. Inside, you can visit the Catania Civic Museum, which displays artwork and artifacts from the castle as well as the Catania area. These works represent the diverse influences throughout Sicilian history. See Museo Civico Castello Ursino and all Catania has to offer by arranging your trip with our Catania tourist route planner.

  • a well-preserved Castle of Frederick II. I believe that it is necessary to visit necessarily, if you want to explore the history and architecture of Catania. located on the upper floors of the permanent exhibition of paintings, from Gothic, middle ages, until the last century. There is a collection of coins and prints. very interesting to see how the city has changed before and after the eruption of Mount Etna. on the lower floors of the Museum hosts temporary exhibitions. in January 2017 exhibition "Museo delle follia"-"insanity". very unusual and worthy of attention! good shop of books and souvenirs.

  • I do not know as usual, but now here on the ground floor an exhibition of "Madness". We came only because of the name. Definitely worth a visit. The second floor is mostly painting. Quite a decent collection of Italian masters.

  • Castle built by Frederick II in the 13th century, charming hosts regular exhibitions on the ground floor (Museum of madness until February 2017) and permanent exhibition upstairs. Museum of madness very particular and fairly treated shame you can't say the same of the permanent exhibition; Often recessed lights inappropriately, crunches too burnt out lights in the floor, finds little valued and staff just diminish the perceived value of a structure which is well worth a visit but also a dash of care!

  • Great castle which was on a peninsula surrounded by the sea, now firmly in the middle of the city due to volcanic activity. The yard was used as a prison and had the graffiti to show for it.
  • Fun, interesting artwork. Not a lot of stuff about the castle though.
  • Thanks to many exhibitions this place emerge as one of the most significant places in Catania.
  • Interesting exhibition mixed with permanent collection
  • I hadn't done my research. I was hoping for a castle and its history but this is actually an art gallery in a castle! If you're looking for modern art I'm sure you will enjoy. If you're looking for a castle I'd steer clear!!
