  • Visit Catania without going through the Monastery would be a crime! Opt for the service guide, available at the entrance from piazza Dante, to enjoy all the details.

  • The Benedictine monastery of Catania, a jewel of Sicilian baroque. Since 2002, along with other seven cities monuments of Val di Noto, is part of cultural heritage by Unesco. The monastery, dedicated to San Nicolò L'Arena, dates back to the 16th century but its history is built brick by brick in several centuries, up to the present day. The result is an interesting architectural integration between different epochs marked by eruptions, earthquakes and historic social changes. Today the monastery is the seat of the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania, in the huge halls and small cells study thousands of kids. Also houses a domus romana, two cloisters and a splendid roof garden. Open to the public every day can be lived thanks to guided tours of the Association Cultural Workshops. For anyone visiting Catania is a must, through the monastery one can read the history of Etna town from antiquity to the present day.
