Duomo di Catania, Catania

4.4
#2 of 31 in Sightseeing in Catania
Architectural Building Religious Site
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Duomo di Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians.
