Duomo di Catania, Catania

Architectural Building
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Duomo di Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians. • The Cathedral of Catania, or Santa Águeda, is a church in Catania destroyed and rebuilt several times due earthquakes and eruptions of the nearby volcano Etna. It was originally built in 1078-1093, on the ruins of the ancient Roman thermal baths. In 1169 he was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake, leaving only the area of the apse untouched. Further damage was introduced by a fire in that same year, but the most catastrophic event was the 1693 earthquake which left everything in ruins. It was later rebuilt in Baroque style. Today, the traces of the original Norman building are part of the cruise, the two towers and the three semicircular apses, composed of large stones of lava, most of them recovered from the Imperial Roman buildings. The dome goes back to 1802. The Bell Tower was originally erected in 1387, with a height of 70 metres. A clock was added in 1662, the structure came to 90 meters, after the destruction of 1693 was rebuilt, with the addition of a 7.5-ton Bell, the third largest in Italy, after that of St. Peter's Basilica and the Duomo of Milan.

  • The visit to the historical centre of Catania is something that must not be missed to the traveller. The catanese Baroque is wonderful. Every corner of the city is to watch carefully. The Cathedral and its square with "DONNAFLEISCHER" elephant city and via Crociferi with its splendid baroque churches. Beautiful!
