Duomo di Catania, Catania

4.4/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Duomo di Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians. • Beautiful example of late Baroque neo-classical influences with deep (see cupola), perfectly integrated in the monumental complex of piazza del duomo, the elephant fountain and via Etnea and Vittorio Emanuele. Beautiful interiors with relics and precious organ but in my opinion do not reach the architectural quality of the exterior.

  • Each region of Italy is unique. The churches are all glorious and ornate and BEAUTIFUL! This one is amazing. If you have an opportunity to go, please do!
  • All in all a learned raising construction. Alone that giant artworks on the walls are a visit worth also for non Catholics. Unfortunately many beggars there so a point less
