Duomo di Catania, Catania
(4.4/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Duomo di Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians. Using our world travel planner, Catania attractions like Duomo di Catania can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • The first time we got to the square during the siesta, had to schedule a visit again, we have not regretted. Luxurious decoration in Baroque style on the outside and inside the Cathedral attracts the eye, it would be desirable to embody all these details in its memory. At the burial place of the great Bellini feel genuine AWE.

  • Place where lie the mortal remains of Saint Agatha (Santuzza for Catania). Inside you feel the sacredness of the place and everything looks very mystical and religious. To visit, of course, the shrine of the Saint, and the grandeur of the Cathedral.
