Duomo di Catania, Catania

4.4
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Duomo di Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians. • These were the days of the feast of Saint Agatha and the square was a riot of colors, sounds, lights and manifestations. And the Cathedral in this celebration and jubilation has its central position rightly. To see, always from the outside, the apse of magnificent dark volcanic stone.

  • The weather wasn't great but we've seen before from the outside, then from within, this beauty of the city. A beautiful church decorated for the party these days. Not to be missed.

  • These days, you can breathe a unique atmosphere. The feast of St Agatha, brings a miscellany of religiosity, folklore and the smells, flavours that cannot be found anywhere in the world. We must attend to see and hear what happens. It is not easy to describe everything that is perceived. But I assure you that we remain fascinated by the Duomo, the feretory di Sant'Agata, drawn by devotees with the "bag", by Candlemas, by the sea of people that tightens around the statue of Saint Agatha, the cry of "citizens, citizens, all devotees all??? Certu, certu "to see and get excited ...
