Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, Castelnuovo dell'Abate

4.7
A former Benedictine monastery with a Carolingian edifice, Abbazia di Sant'Antimo offers archaeological intrigue. While there is no proof Charlemagne founded the site, the early foundations date back to his era. The abbey's humble interior houses Carolingian-era carvings depicting animals and plants. You'll see the inspiration for these works of art right outside the chapel doors, where vineyards, mountains, and landscaped gardens invite you to explore. • I often visited this Abbey, full of atmosphere, magic and charm. A few months ago you can also visit the underground Gallery is where scripta has a highly unusual and evocative view of the Interior of the Church. But highly recommended to those who went on holiday in Montalcino and Val d'Orcia

  • An atmosphere of peace is what you will find here, no tourist large-scale unrest unless it is a large of visitors in montalcino (so close). Place of silence and prayer, don't come thinking of trinkets.

  • Splendid and ancient Abbey surrounded by greenery of the Tuscan countryside, in the Romanesque style, very simple but profoundly mystical. Guarded by the Olivetan Benedictine monks, staying at the monastery which is near. Well worth a visit for a break of silence.

  • One of the most beautiful Romanesque abbeys in the world. Perfectly located on a little hill overlooking the Tuscan countryside, its bell tower flanked by a giant cypress. Used to rate this 5 stars when there was still a community of monks living here who performed Gregorian chants.
  • Abbey very traditional. Change of experience from those opulent ones in venice.
  • Definitely the most beautiful abbey in Italy! We've come here for at least 20 years. In the beginning there were almost no tourists. Now the way down is paved, paid parking and there even is a shop at the top of the hill..... But still it's the most beautiful abbey of Italy :-) Try to stay for a service when you're here.
  • Free visit. Extremely characteristic and still in perfect shape.
  • An incredible abbey in an open Valley
