  • The basilica of Santa Maria de Gulia, located in the central part of the town of Castellabate, dates from the first half of the 12th century and is built on the existing chapel Shiva. The shrine is dedicated to santa Maria Assunta and nevertheless assumes the name of Santa Maria de Gulia. It is so called, for apheresis, because the Hill on which it stands, based on the view from the sea, it seems a mighty Eagle with the lofty rostrum facing right. The name might also derive from Spire — top or peak. Originally the structure was two aisles in the Romanesque style but underwent numerous transformations also in style. Following the last enlargement done in the 17th century the Church is divided into three naves by two rows of four arches, each with its characteristic late-Romanesque style Bell Tower. The Romanesque style still has mullioned Windows over the coffered ceiling, while date back to the Baroque age the main façade, the transept and the apse. Inside there are various pictorial boards and frescoes of great artistic value. There is also a tiled floor dating back to the 15th century, with four esagonette around the Central tozzetto is decorated various human profiles echoing an Islamic origin apart from allegorical writings of some late Gothic flavor. The most important work is the altarpiece dating from the year 1472 and performed by Pavanino from Palermo, depicting the Madonna and child enthroned with Saint Peter and Saint John at the sides. The Church was consecrated in the year 1138, by blessed Simeon 5th Abbot of Cava and in 1988 he was elevated to the rank of minor basilica thanks to the important role throughout religious and socioeconomic status.

  • It won't be an extraordinary Basilica ... but call it poor. There are some wonderful masterpieces within (tele, the floor, the baptismal font, the crucifix, the statue of the Patron Saint Costabile and others). Then, despite being dated 12th century has preserved its main features, its Roman spirit. Imperious Bell Tower.
