  • The town of Castelbuono in the Madonie natural park not hibernate. It offers everything that you would expect from the Sicilian life - and a little more in cooler times. By snow-covered peaks, looking at the Mediterranean beach; -the way down is lined with flowers and cultural highlights and winter are celebrated in the towns and villages.   The most versatile of these villages with his gentle tourism is the town of Castelbuono, from the winter sports areas as well as the coastal zones are within easy reach. You are almost within sight of each other; the motto is "mare e monti", and the regional lifestyle is correspondingly varied.   In Castelbuono, once the fruits of autumn are inserted, the hands not considering: the friendly villagers live not "behind the mountains", but before him, and they fill the place even in the winter with a warming vitality. In the bars, pubs, churches and the Castello great music events are offered, and even in bad weather young and old meet on the streets, to talk. A special experience is for visitors to sit on Piazza Margaritha in a cappuccino in the Sun, listening to the accordionist and guitarist, and to see the backdrop of snow-capped mountains in the distance. For the Castelbuoneser, this is an ordinary winter day... And it will break even short grey, then the region or the easily accessible cities of Palermo and Cefalù, nor other attractions offered. In the village itself, here is the Castello in focus, in which the young director Laura Barreca is a fresh program from the classic to the avant-garde. And anyone looking for peace and contemplation, is right at the top with views of the small baroque chapel with the probably strangest angels in the world.   It is very close in the new Planetarium of Isnello, located only a half hour drive heaven. Among the institutions that provide a living, vibrant combination of tradition and modernity in the wake region. The social life is influenced. The idea of the previous Mayor, to meet the very modern problem of littering with an initiative of the unemployed, which with their asses for waste-free streets in the village is one of the many examples. Also the initiative of some young women, with buses to do shopping and other small rides, eco-conscious living in the surrounding area makes it easier.   At the latest in the culinary peculiarities it is now very difficult to decide: Castelbuono is known for its pastries, for the breakdown tone artigianale;  wafer-thin platelets are made pistachio nuts, almonds and nuts. There are of course also excellent cannoli, crispy dough rolls, filled with fresh ricotta. Who appears to usually, which takes the typical cheeses of the Madonie. The Caccio cavallo and the Provola have long been integral parts of the slow food cooking. And the manna, the sweet juice of the ash produced only here is specific to Castelbuono and Pollina.   The Madonie offer of course much more, including the versatile mushroom dishes. The mushroom season starts in April, the precious and delicious Basilische, which are named after the bushes under which they grow is looking for sometimes experts with great effort below the snow line. In the late summer, it is a feast when the mushroom Hunter with full car from the forests come and flaunt magnificent porcini mushrooms and other treasures. Only recently has been discovered the delicious black truffles in the region, which are found by special truffle dogs. The precious tubers are usually hidden the hiker, but he delights in the otherwise extraordinary diversity of regional flora: everywhere he finds orchids, wild Peony, Thistle primeval forests, and cyclamen wild in the cold months and numerous herbs.   There are not many opportunities for the Erkälten however, because it remains only the February. He is the quietest and perhaps even a little grey month in the region, which holds many attractions for him, including festivals and customs that welcome the coming of spring. You can consider, however, the snow of the high mountain peaks, if from March again that beach life gets.

  • Great day trip from Palermo. Good lunch options and great chocolate and cake shop in the center of town. Don't miss the castle chapel which contains the skull of St. Ann.
