  • Piazza dei Re di Roma, a few hundred meri from the Colosseum and the Fori Imperiali, are the beginning of the Via Appia, the Regina Viarum, which from the Centre of the eternal city reaches the shores of the Adriatic Sea. The Appian way was built by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus between 312 and 190 BC to connect, first the city with Colli Albani and thus Capua and toast. Still partly covered with the basolatum of the times of the Republic and the Roman Empire is the way that distinguished himself later all those of Rome: straight, paved and fast scroll carefully. After crossing the vast and still largely unexplored Archaeological Park with its monumental tombs, after about 40 km of the pleasant promenade flanked by uncultivated fields strewn with flocks of sheep and powerful arches of ancient aqueducts, you reach the Lake of Albano dominated and surrounded by the green hills on which stand the turreted little towns of Albano and Castel Gandolfo. In that great Amphitheater formed by the crater of an ancient volcano, there is la perla azzurra del lago. At the heart of the spectacular panorama offered by the nature sandy beaches and steep, rugged spread walls of volcanic rocks that are reflected in the Lake. On the water, usually quiet and deceptively transparent, the families of mallards are mixed with windsurfing boards and canoes of the Capitoline sporting clubs. The hills, covered with forests of oak, beech and oak trees, dotted here and there with shady pine trees, we find the archaeological ruins of Publius Clodius Pulcher and Emperor Domitian, the cisterns built to power the lavish, ancient fountains and the remains of the stadium and the theatre named after Demeter with still, miraculously, kept some original marble statues. From the beaches of the Lake are noticed, up at the top, near the Papal Villa on top of Castel Gandolfo, who enjoys extraterritorial status in international law, the two silvery domes, one of ben 8.5 meters in diameter, of the Astronomical Observatory created in 1935 by Pope Pius IX and still working; domes, Golden sunset, reflect the Sun's rays. Fascinating show is to stay on the shores of the Lake waiting for the sunset and watching the light decline rapidly by wooded hillsides until, while still the two domes are lit, the crater leaden color with here and there the lights of villas around the hills. Wait a little longer savouring the air filled with aromas and scents until sky dotted with stars, it will fetch the Moon that resonates on the water slightly rippled Lake quiet: I assure you that it's worth it.

  • the visit also prolonged and nice bathroom, better more than one, if done in September and still far from the crush of etsate full periods are more than recommended. as well as around the Lake on foot or by bike. the water then, compared with Lakes of bolsena and Nemi, here is warmer and invites even more to go for a swim. at the end of the season then you repsira an atmosphere of calm, relaxation and tranquility that are priceless. too bad the dirt of peasants there remember that carelessness and rudeness are at home!
